It makes sense that this would be the case. They're probably running pretty low on cash now that most people are onto them and won't take the bait. Pissing off nerds with hair-trigger tempers would be like them having their own personal ATM.

When I first heard of this I went over to 4chan (which..wow) and there were a few people claiming it was a trap.

There were also a couple of other people with the opinion that WBC deserved a medal. That their extreme breed of hatred and malice has done more in recent years to open people's mind toward acceptance than anything else through the sheer example of how twisted and misplaced that hate and discrimination is.

Sooo...if Anon wants to go after WBC my attack plan would be to send out letters of appreciation to WBC and media outlets with those exact sentiments. Nothing would hurt WBC more then ending the outrage people feel towards them because then the reactionary attacks would stop and they'd have no one to sue. It would also put a stop to their shock antics and media attention- if the world clapped and smiled at WBC whenever they appeared they'd be at a loss.

(That is, if they really are a savvy group full of conniving lawyers and not lunatic fundies.)

So, Anon put out this press release:

Dear Phred Phelps and WBC Phriends,
So we've been hearing a lot about some letter that we supposedly sent you this morning. Problem is,
we're a bit groggy and don't remember sending it. Our best guess is that you heard about us on that
newfangled TV of yours and thought we might be some good money for your little church.
You thought you could play with Anonymous. You observed our rising notoriety and thought you
would exploit our paradigm for your own gain. And then, you thought you could lure some idiots into a
honeypot for more IPs to sue.
This is not so foreign to us; as you may have heard, we trade in Lulz. You just do not have enough to
offer right now.
While Anonymous thanks you for your interest, and would certainly like to take a break and have some
fun with you guys, we have more pressing matters to deal with at the moment.
But, we will keep this application on file, and will certainly contact you if any openings become
available in future.
Next time, don't call us. We'll call you.
Additionally, as your "Press Release" failed to understand: When Anonymous says we support free
speech, we mean it. We count Beatrice Hall among our Anonymous forebears: "I disapprove of what
you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Do some among our number hate you and your cynical exploitation of your human rights for monetary
gain? Of course. But the MoralFags are also the first to admit that they are, in fact, your rights to
exploit.
In closing, let us assure you: We are not BAWWWING sissies, nor are we afraid of your false god;
we're just really busy. Stay tuned, and we'll come back to play another day.

One of the Phelps girls was on twitter claiming that their site had been hacked and then said something along the lines of 'haha thats the beauty of the site, all you have to do is type www.godhatesfags.com to get the message'

I hate them and I hope Anon can find a way to get them where it hurts (and not just because this thread is an embarrasment otherwise. Hi, me! )

Did anyone else see the Colbert Report last night? Apparently a corporate super hacker catcher got PWNED by Anonymous after talking big shit and trying to take down WikiLeaks. They shut down his website, broke into his email and published ones from his wife threatening divorce, and remotely wiped his IPad. Do not taunt Anonymous/Wikileaks.

Babycakes, the site Ars Technica did a series of stories on HBGary, and it is great to read. The stories are all long, and some of the computer speak is confusing if you aren't a l33t haxor, but it's worth it.

These people scare me. They are no better than terrorists living in their own plane of reality, without checks and balances. We can all cheer when they hack WBC to make a moral judgment, but what's to stop them from making some other moral judgment that broadcasts your mortgage records or credit card numbers?
