I just finished reading the Vanity Fair article in the July issue. Rather fascinating, and made me like Charles more, and the Queen less.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Andrew as Charles takes over more and more royal duties and Andrew doesn't have the crown to protect him anymore. There has to be a fair amount of sibling rivalry going on there... that makes the situation filled with drama!

According to article Charles absolutely wants to get Andrew and girls off the payroll, which could pose even more problems for the Yorks, as you'd have not only Andrew and Sarah cavorting with ne'er do wells, but also Bea and Eug-- who are said to worship their mother.

The article also speculates the Queen herself paid off the vast majority of Sarah's debts in an effort to make Andrews problems go away.

As was said up thread, Andrew and Sarah are a lot alike. It's said he and the girls have trouble living off of $400K/year. He's also made sure Bea and Eug are always in front of the queen so they're taken care of financially by her.

Any knowledge if the Queen has to give the majority of her money/property to Charles (as King), or can she give the bulk of her personal fortune to Andrew so he can kind of skate by in the twilight of his years?

My guess is she leaves more to Andrew. I've heard about that happening in regular families, the chronic screw-up gets more money because the other kids are capable of taking care of themselves.

Why is Andrew such a screw-up?

Although Anne and Charles have had their personal travails, they actually seem to do their charity work and fulfill their other royal responsibilities.

I don't know much about Edward.

I'm assuming the Queen is paying for Andrew with her private income from the Civil List-basically, the monarch gets a certain amount of money a year in exchange for signing over the land owned by the monarchy, which is considerable. That money belongs to the Monarch the instituation not Elizabeth Windsor the person, so all the money will be Charles's to do what he wants with when he's king-sort of like how he now gets money from the Duchy of Cornwall.

According to the article, Andrew was just indulged way too much by the Queen (and everyone else). There have never been any *real* consequences for his actions. For instance, after the brouhaha with Epstein, The Queen bestowed an honor on him that in a manner of speaking makes him off limits gov't agencies. The title was given to him this spring, almost immediately after the scandal erupted, and is called the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

If Andrew actually committed an illegal act, he'd be exempt from prosecution (at least that was my take from VF).

So to answer your question, when mummy cleans up your messes, you can be a perpetual screw up!

As to Edward-- he makes documentaries and has some PR faux pas (as has his wife), but they're relatively minor compared to Andrew... and it seems like no one really cares.

Sadly, Andrew's girls are not cute enough to get much attention beyond snark. The new generation is all about William and Harry - who get the attention because of Diana, and because they are next in line, and not bad looking.

Andrew is still 4th in line (right?), but no one gives a crap about him anymore. And the girls only get attention for wearing trainwreck clothes and hats.

The sad thing is that Sarah thinks Andrew is some sort of God because he's nice to her. Isn't he into YOUNG girls? It just goes to prove - pedigree means nothing. You can still be trashy and royal. Charles and William seem dignified and royal. Harry - hmm, we'll see. And this family? A mess.
