As far as dukedoms go, I think the only difference is a Royal Duke is higher than a "regular" duke (say, the Duke of Wellington).
Downto Abbey DVDs should come with a line up card like at baseball games.

If Andrew* had a son, I believe he would be HRH Prince Randy 😉 of York, and assume the royal dukedom at Andrew’s death. Randy’s son, would not be an HRH, so he would start out as one of the subsidiary titles like Earl of Inverness. He would not be entitled to the style of HRH, he would just be an ordinary Earl, and eventually an ordinary Duke. The HRH goes to all of the sovereign’s children and the male line grandchildren, (and of course, all of the Cambridge children receive it because we expect William to be King, just as all of HM’s children received it since she was nearly a sure thing to become Queen Regnant. The Wessex children *are* HRH Prince and Princess, we’re just pretending they’re not.
They’re used to be an additional step down the ladder to His/Her Highness (HH), which I think went to male line great-grandchildren, and perhaps some situations involving questionable marriages. babycakes probably knows, I’m getting out of my depth.
*Margaritas were involved in this post. I originally wrote Harry instead of Andrew. SMH.

Prince and Princess titles descend in the male line as far as grandchildren of of the Sovereign, though the queen recently decided that any children born to the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should also hold the title. So the current Duke of Kent is Prince Edward because his grandfather was a king and his father a prince, but his son will simply be the Duke of Kent. This was decreed by King George V, Elizabeth's grandfather, probably to cut off an endless stream of princes and princesses wandering around the countryside.

You can't have too many of them in case it devalues the brand.

I have a hilarious mental image of courtiers sitting around trying to come up with suitable titles for the youngest V/A progeny.

Well, back then they still had all those German titles available, too.

Then the German titles all got tossed during WWI and they got cut back to earls and marquesses.

Was Sarah drunk today at Ascot? Some of her faces make her look inebriated.
