I don't think she saw that she was going to cause any damage. However, some royal academics think that it was the beginning of the end of the old monarchy because it was the first veil piercing.
Poor Crawfie. She left all her belongings, including her diaries and such, to Elizabeth and they are currently sitting in the archives somewhere never to be touched by human hands.

QEII attended the formal opening/dedication of the new memorial to New Zealand soldiers on 11/11 ( here she is with the NZ PM Helen Clark), and man...she looked old. I mean, I realise she's 80, but, watching on TV for a couple of minutes, there was a frailty and a kind of weakness there that I'd never been aware of before. She's always had her mother's air of health and vigour about her. Is she ill at the moment?

I don't know of she is ill, but last week she cancelled duties because of "back problems". Maybe she is still suffering from them.

Apparently, she's not ill enough to send Chucky and the Dutchess of Seabiscuit down under in her place.

The Queen has managed to remain a steadfast and pervasive symbol and at the same time rather an enigma.
I think the Royal Family is a f**cked up institution, but I also think that she has performed her job marvelously. Her children, except perhaps for Anne, have fallen short (but that's likely due in part to her upbringing).

Her job mostly consists of cutting ribbons and christening ships. It's hard to fuck that one up.

I think her job is a bit more involved than ribbons and ships. I'm sure there's quite a bit of diplomacy in which she has to engage at social and government functions. I think she also has to keep up on government matters. I don't know about you, but I would find it tiring to deal with so many strangers at all those social events. But yes, it's not like she's a single mom working two jobs!

She has really never been quoted as saying anything controversial. That in itself is a feat. She knows that the public really doesn't care what her opinion is on different matters. Unlike Charles who gives an opinion on everyone and everything.

I think at this point the public would be rather interested to know her opinions precisely b/c she is so mysterious.
