She just doesn't seem very impressive. Not much personality or style, not a very good parent, doesn't seem to be the nicest person out there, very passive figure.

Oh agreed, she is a massive enigma. What is she thinking? I think she keeps a part of herself private even from her own family.

I sometimes think it's more a question of...is she thinking?

She is hardly a daft woman.

I think she is very intelligent indeed. Personality is not the same as intellect...regardless of what I think of her and how she has evolved emotionally (or lack thereof), I give her credit for being quite intelligent.

I'm not sure I'd be as charitable as Oxynia and call QEII "intelligent" (she is in fact a known philistine, which is apparently part of her charm for large swathes of the British public) but I definitely disagree with you, respectfully, on this one, Mouse. I think her genius is in appearing somewhat passive, or aloof, when in fact she's been running the entire show for a long while. I honestly think the British monarchy would have been toast a few years ago if not for Elizabeth and I think she's going to go down historically as one of the better monarchs, in terms of doing her job. Even people who aren't royalists (myself included) respect her, and many of my English relatives (some of them fairly hardcore lefties) give her her due.
No way in hell would I want to meet this woman in a (metaphorical) dark alley. I know Thatcher is the 'Iron Lady' but I think QEII might be able to give her a run for her money!

Her portrait taken by Annie Leibovitz has been unveiled. I like it a lot.

That's a beautiful shot of the Queen. And the room she is in is divine. Thanks for posting that.

So- why exactly is she visiting Jamestown? It's not like it all turned out well and dandy for the British Empire.
