cinnacism, that works for me as an explanation. I was thinking that if it had been his first killing, then he could have been feeling unsure of himself and the mask was something to hide behind. If it had been his last killing, then it could have symbolized that he was going to be hiding from his true self from now on. But I just couldn't come up with a masked middle murder explanation. Thanks.

^^I thought it just had to do with being recognized by passerby, as it was the only scene of its kind that was totally in public.
hunter, your description on page 1 was spot on for me. It brought me back to the wolf/coyote scene in Collateral, a little Miami Vice with the fonts and the music. I don't like Lynch but from what I've heard it fits the bill there too.
This was a lot more artsy than the commercials let on. I liked it, but it went in totally different directions than I was expecting. And Christina Hendricks... was she just free that day...? She's the only person who stood out for me as strange.
Oh! Re: the ending, was he >>>actually stabbed (just superficially), was he really dead and in his head still driving, or was it special effects off the movie set?<<<

Does anyone else want a pair of driving gloves now? I live in NYC now and I just want a pair for no reason.
I had the opposite reaction as someone up-thread -- that it was really commercial (marketing-wise) for an artsy movie. I don't actually know that many people in real life that knows anything about the movie, seems like there's more people aware of the soundtrack. I was surprised when I saw it as #3 on the Fandango chart although I wasn't sure if it was just counting the NYC market or the entire country.
Three out of my last 5 movies had Ryan Gosling in it (All Good Things, Crazy Stupid Love and Drive) and I am sure the next one is going to be Ides of March.
I think I have a problem.

It's actually a box-office bomb in the rest of the country (# 11 at Box Office Mojo) - besides NYC, it is really successful in Los Angeles, to the point where it accounted for slightly over 10 % of all ticket sales for opening weekend.
I want to say it was mismarketed, but, frankly, I don't know how one could market it realistically without turning audiences off.

I really liked it, but it is way more arty than I expected.

A woman is suing Film District because she says the trailer was "misleading" and she wanted something more Fast & Furious-y.
