Do I think he would kill his son if he was gay? No. Does Tracy advocate killing gays? No. He said a stupid thing. in the heat of the moment, in a room full of like minded audience, he mouthed off. That's like saying Michael Richards would never personally join a lynch mob in real life, so it's okay that he told a black audience member he would be hanging from a tree in the old days. Or whatever the exact lynching remark was. I'm not saying what Tracy said was okay, not by any means, but while I know some would put the Tracy quote in the same category as Micheal Richards quote, I don't. This may be splitting hairs, but I'll own it. Maybe because I, as I said, have heard it so much in discussion with religious types that see homosexuality as an affront to them and their bible. (They see homosexuality by a member of their own family as a choice and therefore a slap in the face to their God, their home, everything they have taught and provided to their child, and a rejection to all they hold dear.) In reality, when it is their own child and not just their mouthing off in a room of jocks or like minded baffoons, they really love their kids, and in most cases except and love them.

Except that...their homosexuality is not a choice, so for them to BLAME and say awful things is completely misguided. In my opinion, Tracy Morgan is unfunny fool who appealed the lowest common denominator for a laugh.

I think the problem that many have with what Tracy Morgan said is that he said it ON STAGE. Sure, people in my family have said stuff like, "if you come home pregnant, I'll kick you out," but they wouldn't do it. It's just that if you say stuff like that on stage, the words can have more of an impact.

I don't get why there is such an uproar now? Have people never heard his routine before? These jokes are nothing new. It surprises me that people are surprised by this and jumping on him for something he has done for years. I'm not defending what he said. It is offensive. I just don't get why people are just now piling on the TM hate train. Do people only know him from SNL/30 Rock? Well, you'll have to excuse my rube-ness, but I've never seen or watched his stand up routines. I know him only from those two shows (and his talk show appearances) and I would suspect a great deal of other people only know him from those appearances, too. Not everyone who appreciated him on those shows follows his every move on YouTube or at comedy clubs.

I only know him from SNL and 30 Rock, and I had no idea he even did stand-up until this incident. I don't like him enough to follow his every move.

No need to be defensive - I was expressing actual surprise that people don't know about his comedy style, not chastising anyone for not following his career. I guess he is the Kevin Hart of his day - a huge celeb in the black community but not a household name outside of it (although I think KH is becoming more popular).

Just because Tracy Morgan wouldn't actually kill his kid, doesn't make it an inoffensive thing to say.

That would be a big fat no. Tracey is an ass and I hope his apology is not readily accepted. I wouldn't be surprised if there was something simmering under the surface. Usually those shouting the loudest against something are involved in it somehow.

No, he's a household name everywhere. He's as mainstream as it gets, considering that he was on SNL for years and now stars in a sitcom that's run six seasons or something. It's just that most people know comics from broadcast TV and don't go to comedy clubs. There's a handful of comics, of every background, whose HBO specials and DVDs go mainstream (Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Kings of Comedy) but most don't. Guys like Jerry Seinfeld, Brad Garrett, and Ray Romano are, like Tracey, much better know as sitcom stars than stand ups, despite huge success in onstage. I'm just amazed anyone would pay money to see him. He never once made me laugh on SNL, he's not funny on his talk show appearances, he looks like he'd smell bad, and it's obvious on 30 Rock that the writers have created a character for him that's essentially him but even more moronic so that even his weak talent can't screw it up.

Sure, people in my family have said stuff like, "if you come home pregnant, I'll kick you out," but they wouldn't do it. It's just that if you say stuff like that on stage, the words can have more of an impact. Exactly. And as far as comparisons to Michael Richards (which were inevitable) not excusing MR's rants, which were inexcusible and horrible. But the big difference is MR said what he said in the heat of the moment while dealing with a heckler. Now, again it was inexcusible because who says those things if they aren't right there under the surface. But Tracy said what he said- as part of his ACT. He'd planned to deliver those lines, had time to think about it and probably even rehearse it. That was his material for the night. So his idea of a funny routine was to make fun of gay teen suicide, and announce that he would stab his son if he were gay and also call him the 'N' word. I... just have no words. And its not like he was some green comic trying to find his style or voice and deciding he'd go the Andrew Dice Clay route and be 'shocking'. No, he's been in the biz for a long time. He knows what's funny (Hell, Brian Fellows and Woodrow gave me more laughs than most anything else during that period of SNL) It's even extra skeevy to think that his thought process when deciding on his material was that it WOULD go over well with his audience in TN. He had a chance to be positive and maybe change some folks' minds. He also had a chance to not bring those subjects up at all and find some other way to be funny and entertaining. But he chose to spread a little more ugliness in the world and... yeah thanks Tracy. You just took my warm fuzzies over Brian Fellows and Woodrow away. Kindly
