Solly79, it seemed to me that Edith's boyfriend is in some sort of Nazi detainment camp or dead. Isn't that what happened to people who just "disappeared" under Hitler's rule? 1923 is far too early for that--I don't think Hitler had any elected power until 1933, but 1923 is the year of the Beerhall Putsch, which is very much about Hitler's early years. As far as what happens to Michael, I guess it could be anything although my gut is that he disappears on purpose. I've spoiled myself, but I haven't seen the episodes in question, so I don't know if the German Workers Party is ever mentioned. The Downton wikia suggests it's probably the Sturmabteilung. I don't completely buy Edith and Michael as a couple, although I have no real argument for my case. PREACH. Can't the Bateseses (or Behhhtses) emigrate to Australia or something? ETA: It just occurred to me that by bringing out the whiff of Hitler, Downton Abbey Godwin Law'd itself. Tee hee!

Thanks Chronies. For some reason, I thought we were in the mid 1920s and Hitler was already in power... Sturmabteilung makes sense. I remember Edith saying he was at a meeting and then disappeared. Fellows jumps around in time, so I'm never quite sure what year we're supposed to be in. Season 4 took place over at least a year, if not more (if Edith went to Switzerland to have a baby, and then wean her and put her up for adoption). It will be interesting to see what they do with her little girl in the new season and how the family reacts.
Like I said, I don't pay too much attention to the details (and haven't since season 2)....

Parts of tonight's episode were snoozerville, but I loved the convo between Matthew's mum, Lady Mary and Tom, and I especially loved the way Edith was kind of aghast at the whole Jack Ross situation. Edith, who is pregnant out of wedlock by a married man and who had previously narc'd on her sister for sexing some other guy a while ago, is just shocked that a black man/jazz singer is in their house. I love the character of Edith--so conflicted, she wants more out of life, can never be as daring and loved as Sibyl was, yet [conveniently] imperfect.

For season 5:
• I want Molesley to wind up with Thomas' job, even if it's only temporary, because Thomas is at his best when things don't go his way. And because Molesley deserves an effing break for once.
• I want Edith's missing boyfriend to be doing something hush hush for SIS {MI6} like Lord Peter Wimsey. And I want him to come back a hero because Edith also could use an effing break. Bonus points if his heroic return steals the thunder from Mary's engagement to Bachelor #1, Bachelor #2, or Bachelor #3.
• I want more (& better) scenes of Violet, Isobel, & Martha together; and more Harold.

It was indeed a lovely scene between Mary, Branson and Isobel. I'm not spoiled for the rest of the season so I don't know if Branson will actually go to America. If so, it's another big loss for the show because he is one of the only characters I still care about.
I loved the look on Mary's face when she caught Rose and the jazz singer making out. One wonders what she'll do with this information given her own youthful indiscretion. Be cool Mary!

This is part of the reason I can't hate Mary. I know barreling into an intimate scene is hardly ladylike, but she was plenty discreet--I hope that she gives Rose a talking-to at most. I did spoil myself for the big picture for this storyline, but I don't remember the details.

I want to see more of Edith's writing career. We know she has one, after all. Why can't she become like Nancy or Jessica Mitford? A novelist or crusading journalist? IMO, that would set her apart. I'm kind of tired of Edith as the hard-luck character.
Oh, and I love Violet and Isobel as frenemies.

Good point! On a total shallow note, imagine the set dressing for a 1920s office place. I would swoon with all that stuff just lying about.
About Rose and her jaunt with Jack Ross, is she dense, or a provocateur?
ETA: It's been kind of bugging me, but I couldn't place why this turn of events seemed so familiar. I'm rather late to this, I'm sure, but it often feels like Fellowes has ripped key plot points from EM Forster novels. Edith's predicament is very Howards End.
