I agree with everything kostgard said, and would add maybe in addition you have to love seeing all the thousands of stupid little rules the British aristocracy lived by? Things like breakfast was set up buffet style for the men and single ladies. Only married women could have breakfast in bed. Every episode is filled with that kind of thing.

This may be completely disruptive to ask, but I'm going to deliberately ignore the rest of this thread and ask if there was a general tipping point where this show became addictive? I've never seen it, but have heard so much about it, so I've tried to watch it, but could never get past the first episode. If Mad Men and This is Us are any indication, I COULD get completely sucked in at some point, but it's always a struggle to get past the beginning. If I knew when it got really good, I think I could concentrate until that point and get to the good stuff... It became addictive for me after the episode with Mr. Pamuk.

Another option: start by watching Gosford Park.

Another option: start by watching Gosford Park. You would say that And you are of course correct! This is what made me start watching Downton, realizing it was from the same writer as Gosford Park.

Fresh garbage movie. Not that I won't watch it. The Dowager was supposed to die 3 years ago according to the last movie. Did Isobel Crawley come up with a cutting-edge cure for her? It looks like Mary's husband is going to be MIA from this movie too. I'm sad that these movies are negating the better life Daisy, and several other characters, were supposed to be pursuing as of the end of the series. The silly tone makes me long for one of the Bates's to be charged with murder, just for the drama.

That does look silly as hell. It seems the cast is splitting in two - some staying to watch a movie be filmed, the others going to the villa in France.
And Maggie Smith doesn’t appear with either group. I’m really hoping she’s got one scene then Fellowes allows her an extremely dramatic death scene. Either than or she’s all “So long, suckers!” and levitates out of the room to go devour some children to maintain her immortality.
And yes - the Bateses are criminals and should either pay for their crimes or just go on a killing spree, giggling the whole way. I might buy a ticket for that.
But otherwise, it looks like Thomas gets a gay encounter but no relationship, whatever health problem Carson had at the end of the series is completely gone, and I’m afraid they are doing some fan service thing with Tom having marital problems and talking to Mary about it.

Downtown Abbey is my crack addiction, and Julian Fellowes is my dealer.😉
Not looking great, but I'm easily distracted by the costumes.

If you guys are looking for something Downton Abbey-ish to watch, you should check out the original Upstairs Downstairs (1971). It was the Downton Abbey of its day, it covered the years 1903-1930, and it was fabulous. The first few episodes were in black and white because of a strike being on, but the rest are in colour.
