Rooney on the cover of January's Allure. Interview excerpts:

On her sister, actress Kate Mara: “We’re so different that there’s never been a competitiveness between us in work. She is probably much more likable than I am. She’s really outgoing and fun. I’m definitely more of the odd sister.”

On filming The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: “Nudity is such a huge part of the character in the book, so I never thought twice about it. There was no time for hesitation. I didn’t have time to second-guess anything or be scared; I just showed up and was comfortable….People always ask, ‘Were you crying when they cut your hair?’ And it didn’t freak me out at all. I was really happy to do it.”

On getting her nipple pierced for the role: “I’m naked quite a lot in the movie, and I thought, she has it in the book, and she should have it [in the movie]. Because of all the tattoos and the makeup and the piercings, and the physical transformations my body has to go through, it would always feel sort of like I was in costume, even if I was naked. It just felt like a good one to get—a necessary one to get.”

Metro: What’s the one part of Lisbeth that’s depicted in the movie that might get overlooked, a detail that you hope people catch?

Rooney Mara: I can’t think of a serious answer to that question, but I can think of a ridiculous answer to that question.

Ridiculous answers work, too.

Well, her merkin. There was a lot of discussion that went into my merkin for the movie, because I was naked quite a lot. And I don’t think a lot of people will notice all of the attention that went into that. But there was a lot of discussions around that.

What sort of discussions are we talking about?

Well, you know, in the book she’s meant to have strawberry-blonde hair originally and she dyes it, so we had a special merkin made that was, you know, strawberry-blonde so that it would fit. [laughs]

She's getting great reviews, but as herself she still seems like she's trying too hard. She's such a blank actress, and I think that that works well with her portrayal of Lisbeth as autistic/withdrawn.

Girlfriends needs a new publicist or some media coaching because she's sort of annoying in interviews and yes, she does try too hard to come off like she's not your typical starlet and that she's genuinely weird. She seems like a type of actress that could blossom under strong directors. It would be interesting to see how she fares once she leaves Fincher's shadows and have to trust her own instincts and aspirations.

I am an irrational dislike of her based on her name. I know it's ridiculous and it's basically her given name, but it drives me mad.

Up until this point Mara has had practically no public profile & her first big budget staring role film hasn't even come out yet and some of the blogs are already nipping at her. They cycle of building them up and tearing them down is going at rapid pace in Hollywood as of late.

The hype surrounding this movie and Rooney Mara has been way over done in my opinion. So far she is getting great reviews but if the film doesn't perform huge at the box office or garner some significant awards traction I think there should be some egg on the face. All the high profile mag covers + features (W, Vogue, Allure, Interview, EW, Dazed & Confused) for this completely unknown actress and David Fincher is uncalled for imo. Yes I get that this was a a role that a lot of young actresses in Hollywood wanted, but that is more likely because there are so few starring roles in big budget films available to them. And yes Fincher has become somewhat a big deal & is respected. But he is not on Christopher Nolan's level of event film making or PTA type Oscar baity auteur.

And the lack of humility Mara has shown (trashing her previous film/tv credits..that weren't even that long ago!) during her roll out has been a huge turn off for me. I'm not saying she should be doing kart wheels thanking her lucky stars that Fincher picked her out of a huge talented crowd (and sent her career on a different path). But she comes across as pretty entitled in the what I've read so far and this girl was straight up awful in ANOES and barely registered for me in TSN.

She disses SVU in that interview too.

Her part in a 2006 episode of Law & Order: SVU: “It was so awful. So stupid. People are obsessed with that show. I don’t get it. Me and my boyfriend—although I don’t look old enough to have a boyfriend—went and beat up these fat people, and at the end of the show you find out that I used to be obese and I hate fat people. It’s ridiculous. Who would ever do that? Who would beat someone up because they’re fat? And as retribution, they sodomized her. I mean, I’ve been sodomized since the beginning of my career. I should have known then it would come full circle.”

I realize that's probably not most actors' dream role, but she always sounds so ungrateful for having to lower herself to do less than A-list work on her way to the top. She had some quotes about how much she hated Nightmare on Elm Street too.

All in all, I'll take her sister, who does a damn good job on American Horror Story.

I think the hype over the movie & her performance is warranted. It's a hugely popular series of books and a very meaty female role that most actresses in that age bracket were fighting over. I happen to think Fincher is a fantastic filmmaker. Seven is on my all time top ten movies. So for all of the reasons above I am very excited about the movie. I do think the real test for Rooney will be the roles she plays after she is done playing Lisbeth.

Completely. And as a sports fan, her name always reads as Steelers Giants to me. I wonder if she chose to go by her middle name to subtly highlight her old money lineage?

That she comes off as such an entitled and ungrateful snot in her interviews isn’t exactly helping me put away the tinfoil hat either.

I think I already said this (in this very thread, yet), but does she think she's the first actor who did some shit before doing good work? People with considerable more success and praise than she has don't dis their initial, crappy, work as much as she does. Especially considering how incestuous Hollywood is, I doubt the constant insulting of other people will work for her over the long term.

But it's mildly entertaining while it lasts.

Oh! I didn't realize that was the role she played on SVU. Tells you how much I cared. I was indifferent to her, but she's starting to irk me with her try-hard attitude. We get it. You're Lisbeth. Get over yourself and grow your damn bangs out!
