Garry Marshal's sequel (of sorts) to Valentine's Day: Official siteSaw this today, and whoa, was this bad. And not fun-bad, just bad-bad. I admit: I kind of didn't hate Valentine's Day. Yes, it was cliched and tried too hard to be Love Actually, but it had it's moments, such as Julia Roberts and her son (which I seriously loved) and the Bradley Cooper /Eric Dane reveal. New Year's Eve has none of those moments. It was trite and all the celebrities just felt stupid after a while. I hated the baby storyline, and Ashton and Leah had no chemistry. I thought Ashton and Jennifer Garner actually did. There was just not one storyline /character I remotely cared about. And on a shallow note: Everyone looked awful. Between Katherine Heigl's hair (yellow, with bad roots) and her unflattering final dress (she looked almost chubby, quite a feat!) and everyone's make up (Abigail Breslin looked like she was wearing a mask). The only one who kind of looked decent was Hillary Swank. My favorite part was actually Zac Efron. Go figure.

Is Ashton playing the same character he played in Valentine's Day or is this a different one (well, as different as a character played by Kutcher can be) ? I will check this out on DVD one day but even from the trailer I thought that the Zefron part of the film looked the most decent.

I feel like these movies sum up Hollywood at its soulless, money-grabbing worst. So again, this movie names itself after a special day, assuming the sheep-like public will think they have to see it in the run-up to the day. They fill it with a dozen actors of varying ages, thinking that everybody from teens to grandmas will spot a star they're willing to buy a ticket for. And of course, the actors will do it, as they get paid for what probably amounted to about a week of work each. I found Valentine's Day watchable and entertaining in parts, but its raison d'etre was as obvious as Blake Lively's pap shots (speaking of which, I'm a little surprised that neither Blake nor Ryan Reynolds has been in one of these movies yet). And it sounds like this time around, they even decided to dispense with those pesky 'watchable and entertaining' bits - it's not like they need them to get people to pay to see this in droves. I wonder if we can predict the next movie? Fourth of July? Martin Luther King day? They might have run out of international celebrations and have to focus solely on the US market, after all. I'm assuming they're not doing Christmas because that's the only thing preventing the makers of Love, Actually from flat-out suing. I think what annoys me most about New Year's Eve, is that I actually do want to see it for the Michelle Pfeiffer/Zac Efron story. But I'm ashamed of myself for it.

Labor Day? Halloween? Arbor Day? Ooh, Mardi Gras? Maybe that last one wouldn't suck.
I shamefully want to see this.

Looks like it's already on course to be the #1 movie this weekend. It raked in $8million today alone.
I admit that I liked the promo more than I'm guessing I'd like the film. That's how they suck us in!

Is Ashton playing the same character he played in Valentine's Day or is this a different one (well, as different as a character played by Kutcher can be) ? No, he plays a different character. Ashton, Jessica Biel and Hector Elizondon were all in Valentine's Day as different characters. Maybe other people as well - there were so! many! famous actors in this, it was hard to keep up. The movie just lacked any charm, which the first one had. (IMO, obviously)

The Friday projections have been revised down to $5.5 mil. The weekend projection is $-6 mil. Valentine's Day took in $56 mil in its opening weekend so this looks to be underperforming hugely compared to that movie.
I grudgingly watched Valentine's Day as a rental and enjoyed it. The trailer for this movie looks so bad I doubt is watch it if it was playing for free on tv.

Whenever I see the ads/posters for this movie, I think of Roger Ebert's dictum that you should avoid any movie with a bunch of actors' faces in little boxes.

It actually took in just under $14mil for the weekend so it tanked. It's always nice when shitty movies are recognized as such by the movie going public. Hopefully this means no, "thanksgiving day", "Halloween day" or "labour day" spin offs.
