While the death of Don Knotts has made news everywhere - Darren McGavin also passed away today.
My two favorite roles: Carl Kolchak in the Night Stalker - quirky reporter who was convinced the world was full of very strange people and events.
And of course, the dad in A Christmas Story - totally unforgettable for his portrayal of the Old Man, his language and his love for his Award - "What is it? It's a major award!"

I loved A Christmas Story. He was hilarious in that film. Whenever I get a box marked "fragile" I feel compelled to obnoxiously repeat one of his lines:
"Fra-gee-lee. It must be Italian!"
RIP Mr. McGavin

I'm dating myself, but he was one of my first celeb crushes. I loved Kolchak. Refused to watch the new version and am clinging to my dvd's of the Night Stalker. I enjoyed his performances in Christmas Story and X-files. He was one of television's great actors. He'll be missed.
A sad sad day.

I absolutely loved him! First as Carl Kolchak, then as Ralphie's Old Man.
"Sons-a-bitching Bumpeses!"

I'll date myself, too—I loved Kolchak as well. I had to sneak watching the show because my mother wouldn't allow me to watch it, but it was well worth the nightmares it induced. Sad.

Wow! I can't believe he's gone! MrCatHead and I have been watching the first series of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. DmG is in some of the episodes and he's sooooo young-looking. Sad that's he is gone now. "Yooooouuuu used up all the glue ON PURPOSE!!!!"

Aw no! I was afraid of that when I saw his name on page 1.
Yeah - what she said.
He was good as Murphy Brown's father too.
