I have tickets to see it in the theater on January 4th, so am trying to avoid spoilers. Glad to hear it is good!

I loved it too. It is definitely a fun one off episode. It helps to have knowledge of the previous episodes since there is a lot of back and forth in time.

It didn't knock my socks off, but it was entertaining. I definitely liked the Victorian era bits better, because the modern day bits just reminded me that I found season three largely disappointing and don't really mind that it's another year until season four.
Stray observations:
- Entertainment Industry, please stop putting your actors in fat suits/makeup. Just...stop it. It always looks ridiculous. I kept waiting for Mycroft to say "Bring me Solo and the wookie."
- I liked Victorian Era Molly better than modern day Molly. I wish Molly had more steel in her like VEM did.
- Either the makeup/lighting was kinder, or someone finally handed Cumberbatch a bottle of moisturizer. I fall in the camp that finds him attractive, but his parched skin last season made me want to grind an entire jar of La Mer into his face. It aged him. In this special his skin looked a lot better and had a bit of the boyish dewy-ness he had in season one of Sherlock, back when he looked younger than his chronological age.

Moffatt and Gatiss are quite brilliant in foreshadowing and story. Gatiss indicated that the fourth season was tragic. I have a feeling I know what the tragedy is. And it's unexpected and a tragedy for not only Sherlock but for the audience in a big way.

How do I watch this in the US? It aired on PBS last night. Check your local station for repeat airings, or you could go to the PBS website. Also, if your cable has on demand, it's probably there, too. I thought it was just okay. I feel like Moffatt and Gatiss think they're oh so clever when writing this series, and it ends up feeling try hard to me. I wasn't a big fan of the last season because of that. I did like a lot of the Victorian part and the way it was tied back to the present day.

I really enjoyed it, though my mum thought it was a bit clever clever. I wanted to mention that it was filmed in Tyntersfield house that I visited last year. It's really beautiful.

This has always been the problem I've had with this show, it's very impressed with its own cleverness. I enjoyed it until about 3/4 the way through, but the final scene by the waterfall was too much. I did enjoy the Victorian stuff and the callbacks to the earlier series and original works.

My favorite bit was Sherlock mansplaining feminism to a bunch of women in purple KKK robes. What a shitshow.

I liked it better than season 3. Some random observations WITH SPOILERS!:
1. Martin Freeman is still the better actor in this series. Cumberbatch dialed it back and didn't seem to be perpetually winking at the audience this time, for which I'm grateful. He seemed more at ease this time (compared to series 3). My favorite scenes were still Freeman/Cumberbatch talking.
2. I really hate Andrew Scott. Like really hate him. If he was a main character in series 4, I think I'd pass. I think his over-the-top antics are out of sync with the rest of the cast, and I truly don't understand why fans love him so much. (Aside- I hated him in Spectre too). He makes me twitch. I'm so glad Moriarty is DEAD! Dead, dead, dead!
3. As for Mycroft in the fat suit: In the original canon, Mycroft is morbidly obese. This didn't bother me.
4. I'm confused to the part Mary plays in the Victorian story. She kept saying Mycroft was the smarter brother (also in canon) and she trusted him more (that's why she was working for him), but all of this was done in Sherlock's mind palace. Does season 4 pick up with Mary in cahoots with Mycroft? I still don't trust her, and the huge problem I had with season 3 was her story arc. It didn't make sense, as I always believed Mycroft would have known that Mary was a spy, and the fact that she didn't have a past beyond 5 years should have been a dangerous red flag to him, yet he let her be around his beloved brother- even after she tried to kill him. So many questions!
5. Mofatt and Gatiss are never subtle, so does season 4 take us into a conspiracy.... led by women? Does this mean Mary is the ultimate big bad? Or is it Irene Adler? Or both? In the end, does Mycroft die like Redbeard? Does Sherlock spend the entire series high as a kite? These are questions I need answered!
I guess we'll know in a years' time.
