Has anyone else been watching this BBC Sherlock Holmes adaptation set in present-day London? A friend lent me the DVD, and I've been pleasantly surprised, because I wasn't sure how well they'd pull it off. Long story short: Holmes is a self-described "sociopath" who is really more of a humorous Asperger's syndrome charactor, and he needs a roomate so he proposes Watson, a recently decommisioned Afghanistan war veteran -- and doctor -- move in with him. Holmes is on unofficial call with Scotland Yard to give advice on cases. It's marvelous fun.

Despite my grousing on "Belgravia", I really want to see their take on "Hound of the Baskervilles".

He has a thread! Yay!
I think we may have overdone it with the discussion of S2 in the Brit thread. Glad we have a new one to muck up.

I am absolutely distraught that my usual streaming sources have failed to post the Season 2 premiere. The gifs and stills are so tantalizing.

It's easily the best show on television right now and inspires such great discussions online, especially when someone suggests Robert Downey Jr's Holmes is better. Needle-scratch!

LOVE this show. I love it so much that I'm rewatching season 1.
I'll just repeat some of the things I said in the British TV thread...
I really enjoy the music for the show. It's perfect.
Also, isn't it hilarious the way John never gets to finish food he orders in a restaurant/cafe? When dude brought his cane back to him, my first thought was, "Why didn't he doggie bag his food and bring that back to while he was at it?" Poor John.

While Cumberbatch is reasonably getting the biggest accolades for his Holmes, it's nice to see Martin Freeman finally recognized after soldiering through many shows for his finely-detailed Watson. Playing second-fiddle on any project is harder than it might seem but Freeman is so utterly superb that he deserves a mention for every mention Cumberbatch gets. And cocreator Mark Gatiss' oily Mycroft is genius, too.

I think both Cumberbatch and Freeman do excellent work. And IMO you can see that they have both thought about their characters and are not afraid to take them where they need to go. So Freeman is sometimes muted, because Watson has this deceptive "everyman" demeanor. And Cumberbatch makes Holmes cold and unpleasant and cruel when he needs to. I don't know, I'm not expressing that well, but I guess I really like that they're both not pandering for sympathy in their performances. And their chemistry with each other is great.

Oh, I think you're expressing it very well. Freeman's Watson is a seriously shitty boyfriend (though a good friend) and Cumberbatch's Holmes has all the sociopathy inherent in a high-functioning Aspergers' patient (but the accompanying superfocus to be a brilliant deducer).
