Black Girl Sunscreen and Supergoop make my favorite sunscreens. There's also this stuff from a Japanese brand called "Canmake" called Mermaid Skin and it's really nice. Not readily accessible but you can get it from YesStyle, which is a website that sells East Asian products to the Western market. That being said, I'm a cool toned and pale faced girl (read: insta-burn) and I've long given up being able to be in the sun for very long even with sunscreen on. I dread beach days and much prefer summer holidays in the leafy tree covered mountains. And I love my big floppy sun hats. I've long coveted one of the straw hats from Peter Beaton. They're $200+ though and I'm not sure I want to drop that much coin on a hat.

Stylevana has a trio pack on sale, but only for a couple more hours (their sales are frequent, but for a very limited time). It has three brands that are pretty good - the already mentioned Biore, plus Isntree and Thank You Farmer (though the one in this pack is a fancy shimmery one). Thanks for the Peter Beaton link - I have a giant head (thanks for those genes, Dad) and it’s really hard to find cute sun hats that actually fit me, and that site looks like they actually have some styles in my size. $200+ is okay for a hat if it is well-made, because you can use it for years.

Wasn't quite sure where to put this, but can anyone recommend a good sunscreen? I need something that isn't greasy and doesn't make my skin feel hot. It seems like every sunscreen I've tried makes me feel hot, uncomfortable, and causes me to sweat a lot more. Came across this yesterday--I highly recommend the Elta product mentioned in the article! I have had success with California Baby. Almost all other sunblocks irritate my skin. It is white so i have mime face, but it's effective.

I would appreciate recommendations for sun-blocking hats I could work in. I have a sort of largish head with a LOT of really curly hair, so hats have always been too tight or looked stupid on me. But I'm on Retin-A, which requires that you wear sunscreen. I'm religious about putting it on, but I was outside working in my yard all day yesterday and I really wished I could have added a hat for an additional layer of protection. I'm vain enough that I don't want something that looks grandma-ish but I know it will be getting sweaty and dirty, so I don't want anything too fashion-y. Anyone got a suggestion? Hats are just not my area of expertise.

I love Tilley Hats. They’re very durable.

I second the Tilley recommendation - I’ve got a couple, and they are great. They also come in sizes that fit my giant melon head. I wore this one on a trip to Hawaii and my face/head didn’t get burned at all. If you’re looking to spend less money, Sungrubbies has a wide-selection in a wide range of sizes. Most of them are under $50. But as a result, they aren’t as durable (a straw sun hat I got from them started to fray after two seasons), so I think of them as more of the “Old Navy” of hats. They’re cute for now, and not more of an investment like a Tilley hat.

Ooh, I really like the Tilley hat that kostgard linked. That's a little more than I wanted to pay, but I'd rather invest in something that's going to last because I can tell hat-shopping is something that I'm not going to want to do often.
Questions:
* I measured my head and I'm right on the line between two sizes. I left a little slack in the measuring tape so it wasn't a super-tight measure. But would it be better to go up or down a size? I don't want it to be tight on my head but I don't want it blowing off either.
* Khaki or natural? I like both--help me decide!

I know some of their hats have lace on the inside that can be used to secure them. If you don’t like your head feeling snug in a hat, maybe try the higher size. Vice versa if you prefer a snug fit. I vote for natural. I love it, as it goes with everything and attracts less heat than a darker colour

This particular style doesn't have the drawstring on the inside to make it smaller, but I would still default to the larger size, especially if you have a lot of hair. Plus for me when it is hot out, I think a hat that's a little looser feels better than one that is snug. But if you end up thinking it is too big, Tilley will probably be pretty good about exchanging. I admit that I like the hat so much I have it in both colors, but I gravitate to the "natural" one more often. And because it is lighter that's the one I took to Hawaii (didn't want a dark material absorbing more heat and making me hotter).

I plan on wearing it a lot for gardening and it could get a little dirty. That is my main concern about the natural one. I signed up for the Tilley newsletter so I got a 15% off coupon, so I am really close to doing the deed!
