This particular style doesn't have the drawstring on the inside to make it smaller, but I would still default to the larger size, especially if you have a lot of hair. Plus for me when it is hot out, I think a hat that's a little looser feels better than one that is snug. But if you end up thinking it is too big, Tilley will probably be pretty good about exchanging. I admit that I like the hat so much I have it in both colors, but I gravitate to the "natural" one more often. And because it is lighter that's the one I took to Hawaii (didn't want a dark material absorbing more heat and making me hotter). How easy to clean is the hat? I plan on wearing it a lot for gardening and it could get a little dirty. That is my main concern about the natural one. I signed up for the Tilley newsletter so I got a 15% off coupon, so I am really close to doing the deed! I was going to add that the one bummer about the lighter color is it getting dirty. So far I've just done some spot cleaning - if you get it soon after it gets dirty, it's fairly easy. But I got some makeup on the inner liner that didn't come out completely. The khaki is definitely better if dirt is a worry - it's a nice dark green and dirt doesn't show up easily. I'm pretty sure this style is one that you can put in the washer (but not the dryer) if you wash it on the delicate cycle, but you probably have to do a bit of reshaping as it dries so it doesn't get all wrinkled and weird.

kostgard, Tilley should start paying you a commission, because I think I'm going to get one of their hats, too. I have a big head (goes with my big hands and feet), and "one size fits most" NEVER fits me.

I know! I saw the section for Big Headed People and thought, my kind of hat store!

I have a big head (goes with my big hands and feet), and "one size fits most" NEVER fits me. Nothing but love for my fellow melon-headed sisters. I am always the exception for “one size fits most” and it pisses me off. Large-headed ladies exist! We’re out here! And it got real annoying after I got skin cancer on my scalp and thought “Well, I guess I should wear hats” and then couldn’t find any that fit me except some hideous selections from the men’s department. I wanted cute sun hats, dammit! So I did a lot of searching and discovered that what a lot of retailers consider “large” really isn’t. So, what I’ve found is the result of that search: Tilley: Durable, outdoorsy hats, kinda spendy Sun Grubbies: cute, more affordable sun hats E4 Hats: Affordable larger hats. They are mostly unisex, but if you want a bucket hat that’s pretty cheap, they are here. And for some reason I get a lot of compliments when I wear the “army style” cap.

I’ve had my Natural Tilley hat for a couple of years and it still looks clean. They are supposed to be machine washable. I would pretreat stains asap, and, as kostgard suggested, use the delicate or hand wash cycle.

kostgard Thank you for the hat recommendation! I too jumped on board and got myself the Tilley Melanie. It really is a stylish hat for a Tilley hat. I went and bought it locally (support small business, yeah!) and while chatting with the salesperson found out that it is being discontinued. So people if you like that particular hat (thanks kostgard) get it now before it's gone!

OMG, it's hilarious that we all have giant heads! Inherited it from my mother's side of the family, along with being tall. I will have to look at those hats since I've given up on regular ones as they never fit.
(My brother is 6'8", and his wife is 6', so his poor kids got a double dose. My niece didn't learn to walk until she was 18 months old because she was the size of a 3-yo and with the big head it was like learning to balance a basketball on a stick. And my youngest has such a big head that when the nurse came to measure him later she looked at the tape and said, "Oh, that can't be right." It was. Thanks, mom.)

This cracks me up because I identify too much. I get my giant head from my dad. When he played football in high school they had to order a special helmet for him. Also, this scene makes me feel very attacked.

Ok, I did it! I just ordered the Melanie* in natural. We need to arrange a Greecie Zoom call where we all talk to each other while wearing our matching hats.
Thanks to everyone who enabled!
*When I first opened the link that Kostgard posted, I read the hat name as the Melania and so that's what it's probably always going to be in my big ole head.
