I can see after watching this over the weekend the potential it had. It could have been awesome. But there were a number of things that needed a bit more thought. There were tons of plot holes and a million things we’re just supposed to accept without further explanation, like, why didn’t Greta die but every other woman brought to the Queen did? How did she recover? Why didn’t the Queen kill Snow when she was a child? Why would Snow have been the last woman whose heart the Queen would have to take? Why did Snow stabbing the Queen (who is at full strength during their final battle) kill her but when some random guy did it earlier it barely affected her? And what exactly gave the Queen her powers? That flashback didn’t explain anything. And there were too many visuals that, while cool, didn’t add to the story and ultimately were kind of a waste of time. The queen bathing in “milk,” which looked more like glue, for example. If you can even get past the fact that she has a giant vat of “milk” in her castle that drains into a courtyard. I don’t know what the hell that was about. It’s a long movie but could have easily been shorter just by cutting some unnecessary tricks that I’m sure the director refused to let go of.
Also, it really did need a better lead actress. KStew was bad. I’ve never seen someone do so much acting with their teeth. I must admit though, with good makeup and lighting, and when filmed from the proper angle, she can look pretty. Not nearly Charlize’s level, but pretty. The medieval damsel look suits her better than I thought it would. But her character needed much more fleshing out. Everyone loved her without having any reason to, other than adherence to monarchical inheritance. Even a freaking troll just kind of looked at her and said, okay, I guess I won’t kill you after all (man that part really bothered me).
I didn’t hate it though. The music was great. The costumes were great. The dwarves were funny. The sweeping shots of the foggy, green countryside, (Wales I think?) were beautiful, and I’m a sucker for foggy green countryside porn. And Charlize and the actor who played her brother, while they both overacted, were nonetheless fun to watch. Overall it reminded me a lot of the sword and sorcery movies of the 80s, but with much better special effects. And I can see the setup for a sequel, as they left it very open ended as to whether Snow White would end up with William or the Huntsman, as well as what she would do as Queen.
