I saw it and I laughed.

I'm torn. I like the ads but the whole idea of it being based on the Steve Harvey book is a huge turnoff. But it can't be any worse than He's Just Not That Into You and I saw that...

I am excited to see this, too. I am also intrigued by the push to make non-traditional books into feature films--this, Mean Girls, He's Just Not Into You, and now What To Expect When You're Expecting, which I probably won't see as pregnancy movies freak me out.

I was wondering about that too, since there are no characters and plot. Seems like they just buy the rights to the title. (It's not new -- Woody Allen made a comedy called "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex" from the book of the same title in the early 1970s. )

I read the book and wondered how it would translate into a movie. They created characters and a plot. Be forewarned......Steve Harvey is in the movie......just a little bit. Kevin Hart is so funny. I saw He's Just Not That Into You and this was definitely funnier.

One of my students wanted to use this as her midterm project where they compare a text to a performance of a text, but it's a Women's Literature class so I made it clear it has to be a text written by a woman. Ten bucks says she still does it.

I wanted to hate this. I SOOOOO wanted to hate this. But I couldn't. It was funny, touching, and well acted. The ONLY drawback for me was the appearance of Steve Harvey and his bald-ass head, but there weren't many of this.

Why did you want to hate this?

Because I can't stand Steve Harvey and his brand of patriarchal bullshit that capitalizes on black women's fears and insecurities. He's not the only one I hate (the media loves to talk about how black women's standards are too high, they'll die alone, and oh yeah, it's because they're the ugliest), but he's definitely close to the top of the list.
I still think I'd hate the book, but the movie was very enjoyable.
