The thing is, being obsessed about on tumblr does not translate into anything tangible career-wise. As they say, being internet famous is not the same as being actual famous. And Hiddleston has no niche for himself in the movie industry outside of Loki, so that also doesn't really yield anything for him. Internet fame, and that echo chamber that is tumblr contains thousands of "passionate" (I'm trying to be kind) people that are nearly always overly invested in the object of their obsessions lives and career. Each time one of those guys like Daniel Radcliffe or Cumberbatch do theater, their stans fill up the seats and wait for them for hours to try and get a glimpse of them leaving after curtain call. These are the people that write essays in Variety's comment section. They try to level their passion into power to elevate their favorite star's career. I don't know if it has yielded any net results, but I know Cumberbatch is probably as well known for his insane stans as he is for any role he has played. Tickets sold to crazies, are still tickets sold. I think a built in fan base doesn't hurt anyones' earning potential. Cumberbatch also shows the clear limits and dangers of that kind of (obsessive stalker) fandom. When you don't cater to the crazies, they turn on you real fast. They're also usually resentful when a celeb gets too famous and successful, since they like latching onto people they can still perceive as "their little secret". Cumberbatch married and had kids, therefore ending the fantasy that he was their internet boyfriend. And IMO what was perhaps just as important in some of that fanbase turning into trolls and haters is that it became clear that he's ambitious and career oriented and knows exactly what he's doing. The more successful he got and the more it became clear that he didn't need them, the more temper tantrums they threw. These sorts of stans don't want to admit that their objects of obsession affection are grown men with incredibly successful careers, they want to pretend they're "pwecious woobies", that somehow little innocent deer Benny just accidentally stumbled his way into three big multimillion dollar franchises. Cumberbatch basically set all their fantasies on fire in a short time span there a few years ago, and they've hated him ever since. So, I'd say at a certain point having that sort of "fandom" can be damaging, or at least it's only limited in how much it can help out an actor. There's a reason Hiddleston's been trying to distance himself from them as well.

It was Hiddleston's biggest miscalculation to think that getting himself on the cover of US Weekly as Taylor Swift's latest piece was ever going to take his career anywhere but down. Yep. It's one thing to make the "famewhore out a relationship" play, but Taylor Swift was such a bad choice. Sure she gets attention, but she's pretty polarizing and the negative backlash was brewing well before "Hiddleswift" happened. Not that backlash should make someone an untouchable leper, but in PR terms, it seems like a real failure to read the room. And that stupid "I heart" t-shirt, in addition to making him a laughingstock, also doesn't do much to dispel the image of Taylor being totally up her own ass.

I still say the internet fandom doesn't amount to anything. The tumblr obsessives amount to probably less than a thousand women. That's nothing. That's $10,000 in movie tickets if they all went on opening weekend to every film. I think the tumblr fandom provides an amusing thing to talk about when Cumberbatch/Hiddleston etc go on talk shows. And when they are rising stars it probably proves that they have appeal, but I think that's it.
Real stars like Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio have minimal internet fandoms. They open films because the general public trusts their brand.
I read some article yesterday about Hiddleston's brand which is stupid because he doesn't have a brand. There is no such thing as "a Tom Hiddleston movie". The only brand he's established is as that guy who acted like an idiot while dating Taylor Swift and gave an embarrassing speech at the Golden Globes.

If Internet fandom meant anything, Only Lovers Left Alive and Crimson Peak would have been successful.

Holy crap! I know very little about this man, and while I really, really don't like Taylor Swift, I do love listening to her 1989 album with my kids. That interview...sheeeeesh. That's brutal. He sounds a little Tom Cruise-ish. Yikes!

Engaged to Zawe Ashton! I really like them both and hope it works out. They seem low-key and sweet.

Congrats to them. It did seem like she was keeping that left hand in the caftan (caftans- not just for uterine secrets) at the BAFTAs. And what a coincidence that we have two Hollywood Tom H/Z couples at the same time.

Not seen her in anything but she looks cute, they make a nice couple.
What/when was the Tom cringey interview?
Would like to see him in more stuff like The Night Manager. Hell would just like to see more stuff like TNM period, those tv adaptations are always so good, and glam, and engaging. And I would imagine easier to make with a ready made script already part way done in the form of a best selling book.
(OT but which were the 3 multi million franchises that BC has been in, I can only think of Marvel. Sherlock too but I don’t think of it as a franchise or multi-million, is it one of them?)
