Lena Dunham (born May 13, 1986) is an American filmmaker and actress. Based in New York, she is known for her independent film Tiny Furniture (2010), and the HBO series Girls.

Background and education

Dunham was born in New York City, New York, and is the daughter of Laurie Simmons, an artist and photographer, and Carroll Dunham, a painter. Dunham attended Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn, NY, where she met Tiny Furniture alumnus and current actress in her HBO series Girls Jemima Kirke.

She graduated from Oberlin College in 2008, where she studied creative writing. Her father is Protestant (Dunham has said that her father is a Mayflower descendant) and her mother is Jewish; Dunham has stated that she feels "very culturally Jewish".

Career

Dunham's 2010 feature film, Tiny Furniture, won Best Narrative Feature at South by Southwest Music and Media Conference. Dunham herself plays the lead role of Aura.

Dunham's television series, Girls, was greenlit by HBO in early 2011. The show is executive produced by Judd Apatow. Three episodes were screened to positive response at the 2012 South by Southwest Festival. The series premiered April 15, 2012.

Dunham had a cameo in the movie Supporting Characters, along with her fellow Tiny Furniture alumnus Alex Karpovsky.

I like the jumpsuit. It would've looked even better if it was tailored to fit, but it's not too bad. (And is Jemima wearing the Charlotte Olympia Cat-Face flats?? Cute.)

I really don't think it's flattering on either and that's saying something when it comes to Goop.

I just don't get the hype about her at all. I just don't find her funny, talented or hip. When she first burst on the scene the press I read made it sound as though she came from nothing and clawed her way to success when the truth is she grew up in a very wealthy and connected environment. Just as Zooey D goes out of her way to be portrayed as the quirky girl I feel Lena goes out of her way to be the hipster girl. Look at me wearing no pants! I'm so hip. I just don't find it authentic.

Plus her "joke" about dressing up at Halloween as the 3 women that Paul Bernardo tortured, taped and murdered struck me as extremely tasteless. Of course it was immediately followed up by one of those bullshit celeb non-apologies "I'm sorry if anyone was offended". I guess I'm just not hip enough to get her edgy humor and I'm just fine with that if that's what passes for humor in her world.

Re: her talent, I have never seen Girls (although I wanna), but I saw Tiny Furniture years ago -- before she was a "name" -- and loved it. I am really only aware of her personality -- and the huge backlash she's enjoying -- due to Jezebel, but I can't blame her for taking advantage of the connections she was born into. I'd do the same.

I'm pretty sure that the actual tweet (tweeted at Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak) was that they should go as Paul and Karla and she would go as one of their victims. I didn't think it was that funny, but I'm not offended by it either. Serial killers have become such a part of our pop culture, plus it was Halloween and you're supposed to be scary/morbid. To me it's no different from someone dressing up as a celebrity that died that year or something like that. I mean, if you've had a Lifetime movie made about you, I think it's okay for someone to dress up as you for Halloween. I don't think it means that you are glorifying the killers any more than they already have been. I can see where the family would not be thrilled about her going as one of the victims (I think she said she'd go as Karla's sister, who they raped and murdered, if I remember correctly?). So yeah, not really cool... but I definitely don't think it's worth people getting all up in arms as much as they did. Bottom line, I think people just look for things to get offended and outraged by when it comes to Lena. I am not even that big of a fan of hers (I do like Girls a lot, but she is probably my least or 2nd to least favorite on the show), but it actually makes me feel defensive of her a lot of the time. Like, if Seth MacFarlane had tweeted that same thing, would as many people be pissed? No way.
