I'm kind of interested in seeing it, although I haven't liked any Wes Anderson film I've ever seen. I do have a question, though. One of the commercials advertised this film as "the sleeper hit of the summer." I can't turn on the tv without seeing three commercials--how can a film saturating the media with ads that is not entirely in wide release be a sleeper hit?

I loved The Royal Tenenbaums (the only movie of Gwyneth Palthrow's I can stand), but didn't care as munch for The Life Aquatic or The Darjeeling Limitited. They just felt over-worked to me, and lacked the heart of Tenenbaums.
But I thought this was funny and sweet, and really enjoyed it. But yeah, it is undoubtedly Wes Anderson, with all his quirks and fancies (-and great cast and music).
The two young leads were great. I thought they really held their own.
Kara Hayward who played Suzy, really reminded me of Dominique Swain when she played Lolita.

I normally really enjoy Wes Anderson movies (my favorite is perhaps The Darjeeling Limited), but I was totally bored by this one! The girl was quite obviously a young Margot Tenenbaum, a character that I never liked much (well, I liked actual young Margot in The Royal Tenenbaums, but I didn't like adult Paltrow-Margot, if you know what I mean). The boy didn't seem charming, either. I was very curious about the adult love triangle, but it didn't really go anywhere. The lightning strike and fall off the roof were just ridiculous.
Maybe I'm just not all that into kids, or I was too distracted by drama in my real life, or I'm just getting old and cranky, but I was really bored and briefly considered walking out, which I never do.

I just around to seeing this, and I loved it! It was so sweet, and wistful as someone above noted. I was rooting for those kids till the end. I do consider this one of his best, and the cinematography was lush.

I actually am one of the few people who couldn't get into "The Royal Tenenbaums", though I keep meaning to give that movie another shot, but I genuinely loved this one. The kids were so sweet and endearing. I loved that the cast played this with earnestness, not with a snicker, or a sarcastic aside that they could have easily done.

I just saw this and posted in the "What Did You Rent" thread, I can't get over how much I hated it. I should have turned it off when the two kids were on the beach dancing quirkily to Francoise Hardy. The girl in the movie especially bugged me - the character was a Margot Tenenbaum clone, and the actress was awful.
I love The Royal Tenenbaums, but Wes Anderson needs to move on from that. He's turned his own style into a hollow schtick.

Really, you hated it? I don't think Wes Anderson gets tired of movies like this. He's found a niche and doesn't put out films that often; he'll probably find ways to make 'em quirky and cute when he's 80 years old. It's funny, because I expected to dislike it and had the opposite experience. Maybe just my mood at the time...
