Liked it!
I think that they tried hard to differentiate it from the trilogy, and succeeded as much as they could. I will say this: give me Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone over Maguire and Dunst ANY DAY. Garfield was adorable in his troll doll way, yet brought some sexy when it was needed. And Emma- good gracious, I love her and her snark.
Not as good as Spiderman 2, but miles ahead of Spiderman 3. And I like what they did with the story, even if friggin' Steve Kloves wrote it.
Solid B+.

How is that hack is still getting work?! I've heard very mixed to very negative things about the movie. There seems to be almost no enthusiam about the movie either, like there was with The Avengers or Dark Knight Rises. I'm in no rush. I'ill wait and see it on cable.

I saw it a few weeks ago, but everybody had to sign an embargo agreeing not to tweet or post about it until its release. I thought that was strange; surely they would want to generate online buzz?
Anyway, the film was just OK to me. The thing worth seeing it for is Andrew Garfield's performance, which is amazing. Everything else...well, the main problem is that they just re-did the origin story and the first hour just goes over the same beats as the Sam Raimi movie. Going to school, getting picked on by Flash, going on a field trip, bit by the spider, discovering his powers, getting his own back on the bullies, Uncle Ben and the mugger, etc. The critic Mark Kermode pointed out that to today's teenagers the first film will feel like aeons ago, so it's fine for them, but once you're past a certain age, 10 years doesn't feel like a long enough time to do this again. I was bored for the first half. I wish they'd done a completely different story; it's not like there aren't thousands to choose from.

I'm sure I'll see this eventually, based on my insane Emma Stone lurve, but I just have superhero fatigue right now. But apparently, the original cut/story was *very* different and a spring screening at Sony went poorly and things were changed - this site has some tidbits. I would totally see that movie, as it sounds a lot more intriguing.

I thought it was a fun movie. I thought of it as a remake, so I didn't have a problem with the retelling of the Spiderman origin. There were a few holes in the plot, definitely and some loose ends at the end. Overall though, I just liked the actors in their roles so much that it didn't really matter to me. I agree with BoroKat, a solid B+ or even B++.

A wild Irrfan Khan appears!
I enjoyed it, although I'd put it on par or slightly better than the first movie in Raimi's trilogy (which I enjoyed, so that's no slam). huntergrayson, thanks for posting that link about the parts of the story that got cut out - I walked out thinking the filmmakers really lucked out with the casting because the story was a little undercooked. I really enjoyed Martin Sheen and Rhys Ifans.

I keep reading reviews saying that Rhys Ifans is best known for Notting Hill, and I am like, Hello? Xeno Lovegood???

huntergrayson, thanks for posting that link about the parts of the story that got cut out Yes, thanks! This was okay. Better and Spiderman 3 not as good as Spiderman 2. The emo teenager romance was a bit over the top for me. I'm just tired of Spiderman and the reboot was a mediocre one. That's why the cut article was so fascinating, we can see the movie they almost made.

"It's Luna Lovegood's father!" His arc was a slight retread of Doc Ock's in SM2, but that was a good arc and Ifans put his own stamp on it, so I can't complain.

I really liked Andrew Garfield in this but I've seen almost all his films and I always like him so that was no surprise. It's funny though seeing his usual little things (the head shake for example) creeping into every single role he plays now. The rest of the film....well, I laughed when Rhys Ifans turned into the lizard. I'm sorry but the lizard looked terrible. His story was, as Mutagen said, undercooked which was a shame because Ifans was good. Would have liked to see more of Irrfan Khan.
Actually, I liked the first half of the film better than in the first Raimi film but again, this could be down to my Andrew Garfield crush. Tobey Maguire wasn't bad back then but I prefer Peter Parker as a slightly less awkward teen.
