I pictured Chris Evans as Nick throughout the book. Amy was frightening. I started suspecting the twist toward the middle of the first part because her diary was just too perfect. I hated the ending because I felt so sorry for the child. Can you imagine growing up in that situation? I wonder if there's going to be a sequel down the road. I read Jezebel's online chat with Jennifer Weiner the other day, and she mentioned Gone Girl as one of her favorite books this summer, and that she's still "thinking about it." I'm still thinking about it, too, but not necessarily in positive terms, although I have to say it made me start reminiscing about the two serialized girls I read about: the Alice series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and the Anastasia series by Lois Lowry.

Oh Anastasia Krupnik ! One of my favorite girls to ever read about...I loved her. She made me laugh out loud all the time. My favorite one was when she went to modeling school with the briefcase carrying kid Robert. Hilarious ! I sympathized more with Amy throughout the book than Nick. I thought Nick was an idiot. Sure Amy was a sociopath but I rooted for her more than Nick...what a cliche fool he is. I felt at times he deserved everything he got. I also hated it when Amy got robbed by the grifters...I don't think it fit with her meticulous planning and superior personality to let her guard down and get robbed by two backwoods folk.

I just didn't like this book--and I think the reason is that I didn't like any of the characters. I felt sorry for the child, I thought Nick was dull, and Amy just never clicked with me. I think I may have gone in with too high expectations.

I never got why Amy was so crazy about Nick. He was good looking and charming, but on every other level he sucked. Out of all the guys in NYC, why did this one ring her bell? I didn't understand why she stayed when she could easily have dumped him, gotten her money back from the bar, and fled back to NYC. These two deserved each other.
I liked Detective Boney and Go. However, I hate that her character was called "Go" and not "Margo." Was there some symbolism to this? Like Amy was the Gone Girl, and Margo was about to Go, to leave Team Nick? And the mother was called Mo. Mo & Go. It bugged me. I liked that "Nick" was not his actual name, it was Lance and his sister called him that to annoy him. Nick is a much cooler name than Lance. Like Amy pretended to be the Cool Girl, Nick wanted to be the Cool Guy who taught journalism, knew a lot of movie quotes and owned a bar.
As for the grifters, I think Amy could not stand to be alone with herself and that's why she interacted with them. She could only be comfortable when her awesomeness and brilliance was reflected back to her by other people. I knew she would never kill herself, as was her original plan. Then there would be no one to tell her how amazing she was! Someone that in love with themselves could never end it all.

I think the lack of sympathy for both the main characters is part of why I liked the book so much. It's just so sick and twisted. They absolutely deserved each other, and I think that's why Amy knew she would never be satisfied with anyone else.

I cannot begin to express how much I loved this book. I bragged about it so much that I convinced a couple of people to read it, one thing I'm almost never able to do.
Amy: Like some of you I was repulsed and slightly admired her. Her description of the cool girl, spot on. The bitch was crazy! Some of the things she said and did just really made me dislike her. However, I admire smart, cunning people. And that she was. I understoid how and why she got robbed, some people are SO smart, they're dumb. She knew she was smarter than the Backwoods couple, however she failed to realize that there are many types of smart in this world. Amy wasn't street smart by a longshot. I really hate that she didn't get her commupance (sp don't kill me! Wait, this isn't Twop). I really love for my characters to pay for their crimes, but like Nick said "I feel sorry because you have to wake up everyday being you". Having said that, she needed to pay for her crimes.
Nick: I didn't hate nor love Nick. He was awkward. He was also a coward. Leave. Don't cheat or be afraid. Who would sacrifice happiness for public opinion? I feel sorry for that child.
I didn't really care for the ending. But I understood it.
I've read both Sharp Objects and Dark Places. One I didn't care got, the one with the dead family, and the other I loved.
I've been waiting months for someone, anyone, on my favorite forum to mention Gone Girl!

I finally read Gone Girl. I think it was pretty good, definitely held my attention. I found it really sad too, especially watching their marriage unravel, even after I found out that Amy's diary had been fake. I agree, I didn't hate or like Nick. He was just... there. I don't know why someone like Amy would choose to stay with him.
Before I read the book I already knew that Reese was going to play Amy in the movie, so I was picturing her as Amy some of the time. I think she should be able to pull it off. The question is, who can play Nick without making him look like just the biggest oaf ever? I was thinking Jon Hamm might be a good choice, I know Nick is supposed to be several years younger than him (34 to Amy's 38) but I don't see it as being that important. I kept forgetting that Nick was supposed to be younger than Amy and didn't really get the point of that anyway. He could still have cheated on her with a younger woman if they were both 38.
I also found the nickname "Go" for "Margo" to be annoying. Especially when they had characters other than Nick call her that, I mean really? I kept picturing Go as someone like Kat Dennings.

Oh, good call on Kat Dennings. I was thinking someone like Kate Micucci or, specifically, Clarice from Sleepless in Seattle (which must have just been on, because otherwise, WTF, brain?) but that actress hasn't worked since. Maybe Clea Duvall? I had Janel Moloney more in mind for Amy--someone taller, cooler and blander or lower profile than Reese. Matt Bomer is currently my choice for Nick. Anyone have any ideas for Amy's parents?

And someone like Dustin Hoffman for her dad. Valerie Harper for Nick's mom and Jon Voight for his dad. And... Emilia Clarke for Andie? I swear if they cast Kristen Stewart I will barf.

I could see Blythe Danner playing Amy's mother.
