I completely agree, smitten. Gwyneth would be great, although I can imagine an interview. "I am descended from a rabbinical dynasty, and there I was, peeing on a pregnancy test on camera, and this was after I had to drive a Ford Festiva. I almost died."

From what I've read Reese is just producing not starring in the movie. Not sure who I would cast as Amy. I think Amy has to appear sympathetic for a good chunk of the movie and I'd be hard pressed to find Gwyneth sympathetic.
If Reese is out then I'd like Jake G for Nick. He's also worked with Fincher before on Zodiac.

I like Gwyneth as a choice but agree on the sympathy factor. What about Michelle Williams? This may be a little too commercial for her, she tends towards the indy spectrum, but I could see her pulling off the cold & calculating but also sympathetic character. Plus, she is about the right age.

Gwyneth can be charming and radiant when she wants: she was lovely in Emma and Sliding Doors. I could totally see her as Amy, the displaced Manhattanite, but for the fact she's a fraction too old for the character.

Agree with Yossarian. Amy's sympathy is earned not so much because of her character but because of her circumstances and what people were doing to her--her overly-invested parents, her husband, the crummy midwestern suburbs, even the story about the best friend. In addition to Gwyneth's other films, Sylvia was practically training wheels for this role. She was even believably charming in Shallow Hal.
I kind of doubt Gwyneth will get it even though she's a better match, age-wise than Amy Snow or Michelle Williams or Elisha Cuthbert. Does she even audition any more? Also, a few years on this board is making me hear: "I was tricked out of campaigning for the role, because someone told me it was a best-seller."
ETA: Now that I think about it, I don't know if Gwyneth could pull off some of the darker things that happen in the story.

Well, it looks like Ben Affleck is playing Nick in David Fincher's adaptation.

Please not Natalie Portman! I actually think Jennifer Garner would be fantastic playing a woman like Amy, but I doubt they'd go in that direction.

Emily Blunt would be a good choice.

Interesting. He would not have been my choice, I still think Patrick Wilson would have nailed the part. But Affleck does have the asshole face so there's that. Natalie Portman would be a terrible choice, especially across from Affleck. Isn't Amy supposed to be older than Nick? Theron would be my choice too. She's already signed on to Flynn's Dark Places. I wonder if she would do two Flynn adaptations in a row.
