I saw this recently and enjoyed it in spite of the unrealistic plot. I really like the performances and the very raw writing - the John Hamm ski lodge rant anyone?
Unfortunately, I felt Jennifer Westfeldt was the weak link, acting wise. Her self-consciousness was very distracting. Is there some beauty treatment that makes your upper lip DO THAT?
I have to say that I thought it was going to be a comedy so I felt very foolish crying like a little baby on an airplane. Even more so because I kind of wanted it to buck the conventional ending. I didn't really find "fuck the shit out of me" to be too romantic.

I think I agree with each point you made. I think they really captured the sad-but-worth-it inevitability of what happens to people in love after time and kids. (I am not married and don't have kids, so I don't know what it would be like for me, but it SEEMED real and resonated with me anyway). I liked that one couple was still happy together but another had to cut their losses and split up.
I also hated Jennifer Westfeldt's upper lip (her character even made a comment about it in the dialogue). For some reason, people with no upper lip bug me. And her character seemed to be trying too hard to play along with the nonchalant, callous dynamic with Adam Scott's character. Example: when she flashed her post-pregnancy body and asked him to appraise it for attractiveness. Who would do that?? It seems like you'd pretend to be all casual with a guy you're in love with when you're in your early twenties, but should have wised up a little bit by your mid-thirties. Then again, I hear that after pregnancy, women are like "hello, what's the point of modesty?" so maybe that was the angle they were going for.
And yeah, the ending was a big letdown. It felt very immature for a (thus far) fairly mature movie.
Between this movie, Bridesmaids, and the SNL appearances, I realized that I would pay to watch Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm act together all the time.

I know, they play off each other so well.
I agree with basically everything that's been said so far. Jennifer Westfeldt's entire face bothered me though, like she got too much Botox and/or facelifts or something. I swear her face did not move at all.

Their chemistry got kind of ruined for me after the story about them going "method" and hooking up.
I quite liked this movie, but completely agreee Westfeldt was the weak link. I could see how it would be tempting to cast yourself in the lead, but she should have swapped parts with Wiig or Rudolph, IMO. Like Adrienne Shelly and Waitress, giving the lead to Keri Russel while she took a supporting part herself.
Re: the ending, the whole "fuck the shit out of you" I think was meant to show that he was attracted to her, since we knew he he loved and respected her. But I agree that it was akward as hell.

I saw this on a plane. It was okay, but I wouldn't have watched it under other circumstances. Agree that Westfelt's face is SO distracting. This sounds awful, but have her eyes always been...like that? They looked almost painfully small.

I think a pretty smoldering, racy speech could have been written at the end to convey Adam's Scott's attraction, without reducing it to "fuck the shit out of you." I mean, I was surprised when, after he first kissed her in that scene, his delivery of "Does that feel like 'not into you'?" was kinda sultry and hot. They should have expanded in that tone, in my opinion.

She reminded me of The Beast from the Beauty and the Beast TV show with Ron Perlman. It distracted me throughout the whole movie and her acting was terrible. Looked like cheek implants, too? I don't know what the hell that is! It was disappointing how quickly her character was like, "OK! Let's get back on this train after I professed my love for you, you said 'thx, no', and then we did our best to avoid each other for a year."
