In May 2011, it was officially announced that Carrie will be newly adapted on film. MGM and Screen Gems hired Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to write the script for the new film with "a more faithful adaption" of King's novel. Aguirre-Sacasa previously adapted King’s epic The Stand into comic-book form in 2008.
Upon hearing about it, King stated "The real question is why, when the original was so good?" He also suggested Lindsay Lohan for the main role, saying that "it would certainly be fun to cast". Actress Sissy Spacek also expressed her opinion about Lohan as Carrie White, stating that she "was like, 'Oh my God, she's really a beautiful girl' and so I was very flattered that they were casting someone to look like me instead of the real Carrie described in the book. It's gonna be real interesting." In March 2012, the role of Carrie was offered to Chloe Moretz.
Alongside Moretz, Julianne Moore will guest star as Carrie's mother Margaret White, and Gabriella Wilde as Sue Snell. Alex Russell and Broadway actor Ansel Elgort are also in the main cast. Judy Greer will play the gym teacher, Ms. Desjardin.
Kimberly Peirce, known for her work on Boys Don't Cry, is directing this new adaptation.
The film is set to be released on March 15, 2013.
Sony Pictures held a "First Look" event at the New York Comic Con on October 13, 2012. It was followed by a panel session with several members of the cast and crew. The first teaser trailer for the film was released on October 15, 2012.

“We only have, like, four chances to get it right,” the 15-year-old actress told EW about the infamous bloody prom dress scene. ”Because that stuff stains your hair.”
Also pictured inside is a first look shot of Julianne Moore as her abusive religious mom Margaret.
“This woman has clearly had a psychotic break, perhaps several,” Julianne said. “But what’s sad about it for me is that she’s clearly sick and here’s this poor child in the thrall of this person who is seriously ill. And on top of that, they have this mother-daughter relationship. So we want to make that relationship as meaningful as possible, even though it is horrible and destructive.”
