I will disclaimer this by saying that I don't think the original or any of the sequels are any good. The first one is slightly enjoyable in a campy, so bad it's good type way but it's still a really crappy movie.
This one suffers because it doesn't seem to know what it wants to be - an intentionally bad movie, a drama, a horror movie, a thriller, an homage, a parody - it's like five movies/themes jumbled together. There are a few good "gotcha" moments, some good one liners and some genuinely creepy and tense scenes but overall it was just too uneven tone-wise for me to get into.
I think my favorite part was when about halfway through a lady in the row behind me hissed at her friend "this is terrible, we shoulda gone to see Jurassic Park!"
