Saw this yesterday. You know those movies where you wonder if you need to read the book first, or those sequels where you wonder if you'll be lost if you haven't seen the earlier movies? This is like those. I've seen a lot of the movies/TV shows the principals have done and am also familiar with their public "personas" (which they riff on in the movie). Mr. F had really wanted to see it too because it sounded funny, but he didn't know ANY of the actors or their movies or anything. Nothing. I wondered how it would be for him, and indeed - he enjoyed it, but said it wasn't as funny as he was expecting. I really think having that familiarity going in helps.

I don't know. The friend I saw it with is a pop culture luddite and didn't know any of the actors, hadn't seen any of their movies or TV shows (though I think, of all things, she'd seen Seth Rogen's Green Hornet). She laughed so hard she was crying, the whole way through the movie. I think it's less about having familiarity with the actors themselves than it is about enjoying their particular brand of humor, which is indeed very specific.

I loved the first hour of this (coked-out Michael Cera!). But they didn't need to {Spoiler}rape Jonah Hill for laughs. If anything, the scenes before then proved how funny they could be without that. I have had a thing for Jay Baruchel for a few years, and I didn't even know he was in this. BONUS! (This is one of the benefits of rarely reading movie reviews.)
