When I floated that idea I didn't even think of the piece of glass! Yeah, Chekhov's chunk of glass hasn't gone off yet, and saving Alex from Toothpick would be a way to do it (I don't know how they would explain that away to Caputo without extending their sentences by several decades, but then Caputo also has to deal with with the fact that while Toothpick was threatening to kill Alex the rest of the prisoners ran through the fence and were frolicking in the lake).
I agree about Alex being far more interesting without Piper. I thought she was more interesting on her own and with Nicky in season one.

I think I will have to give this season a big 'ol "meh".
The outstanding performer this season was Adrienne Moore aka "Black" Cindy. I really enjoyed her arc, and she played it beautifully.
I love Samira as Poussey, but she didn't get as much to do as I'd hoped.
I missed Natasha Lyonne.
I hate Daya SO much. She is my least favorite character.
Mulgrew is a pro and makes me root for Red. I'm not exactly rooting for her to get with Healy, though.
It's really funny to me that Schilling, Cox and Aduba are the performers who get the acting nominations. Well, Schilling is fine, but she was done in by her awful storylines this season and that GOD AWFUL speech upon the picnic table. But, even Meryl Streep couldn't do much with that horrible piece of writing. I have yet to see Cox do any wonderful ACTING even though she does have a wonderful presence. And Aduba is SO overrated. The novelty/amusement of "Crazy Eyes" is played out. The antics were REALLY annoying this season.

Just finished the finale. Agree with you all re: Piper. The panty ring--I hope that's dropped for next season, enough already. It was funny at first but then dragged. I did appreciate Piper's revenge though.
Penn's backstory is so f*cking awful, Jesus. Taryn Manning plays her so well. Love Boo also. (Was she the one who was electrocuted as a child? That scene was unclear to me.)
I kinda like Dayanara but the Bennett exit was incredibly blunt and awkward. Like wtf, you're proclaiming love for two seasons, one person gives you some advice & you bounce altogether? Even if the actor has other commitments, that was an odd way for him to go out. I did like the various cameos, including pornstache aka mullet guy.
I'm so glad Soso survived, that would've turned things so dark (and the Sophia/Penn story lines are dark enough, thanks). I also wish Crazy Eyes' character was given more to do, although I appreciated her celebrity with Admiral Rod Cocker, lol.

I also wish Crazy Eyes' character was given more to do, although I appreciated her celebrity with Admiral Rod Cocker, lol. That was indeed young Big Boo who got electrocuted. I'm pissed that they ended the season with Sophia still in the SHU. Pennsatucky has had the biggest character turn around on this show, at least for me. She went from being someone I despised to someone I actually felt sorry for. Her friendship with Boo is one of the best things on the show. Other highlights for me was Taystee realizing she was the Mom of her crew, Boo's speech to her dad, and despite how mad it made me Sophia's walk to the SHU. The music was perfect and Laverne Cox totally brought it for that scene. I hope she doesn't just get written off completely. I was annoyed by the whole Lorna story, particularity sending her new boyfriend to beat-up that poor man who's life she's already made a living hell. I hated that it was portrayed as some cute little story.

I binged the season this week. I thought it was really meh. The Latina contingent made my blood boil. I've never liked Daya's mother, but Jesus- I wanted to stick a knife in her. What a toxic woman. Gloria is just hateful too. I realize that women's prison's are populated with women like this, but I couldn't get into their narcissistic storylines. I just ended up fast forwarding through their scenes. It goes without saying that I think Daya's an idiot. I would have hightailed it out of there too if I were Bennett after seeing what her life is like on the outside. I can't believe she'd leave her daughter with her mother's violent boyfriend. I hope it ends up in foster care (and I feel so mean for typing that).
I could see what they were trying to do with Norma, but that storyline fell flat for me too. This is a woman who has a speech impediment, and has been bullied into silence and treated like a doormat for most of her life, and now she's a cult leader?
I did enjoy Cindy's storyline. As a group, I like the African American characters the best. I felt very bad for Sophia in the end, but she's portrayed so well. I really hated her storyline w/ Gloria. But Taystee, Cindy, and Poussey are trying to be good people. I even liked that they accepted Brook in the end. They give me hope. The rest of the characters- not so much.
Lorna's kind of portrayed as some sort of cute character, which bothers me. Poor Christopher. I didn't get LeAnne's Amish storyline... Pennsatucky annoyed me less, but I realized that I don't like Taryn Manning at all- so there's that. Red wasn't given much to do. Piper was blah. I hate Alex. The Panty storyline didn't do anything for me.
So yeah, I went from being a fan in season 1 to sort of liking season 2 to being over it in season 3.

I feel like two themes for this season: mothers/motherhood and belief systems

Don't forget- Piper sucks even more than usual..... No kidding. I thought the panty recruitment speech was funny but other than that, she totally sucked. And while she didn't suck quite as much as she usually does I still don't like Alex either. I want more of Taystee's crew dangit. And more Flaca and Maritza. They're awesome.

I just finished the season this week and the themes seemed to be "moms suck" and "religion sucks (except Judaism)." Pretty bleak. Overall did not really like it all that much, but I still like most of the prison characters. Not interested in Daya and her family drama and the Amish story was ridiculous.
Now that Piper is free of Larry, her primary connection to her life outside prison, she went of the rails. She's so annoying and the triangle between her, Alex, and Stella was so freaking boring. The panty thing was gross and I think it was more about Piper keeping herself busy and getting revenge on a corrupt system by working it to her advantage than actually making money. She wanted power in a place that took all her power away. That was another theme of the season.
The men, the goddamn men. They are such tools. I have met so man assholes like Healy and Caputo and donut man. Think women and the world owe them something just because they outwardly act nice. I love the way the show skewers these jerks.
