I agree with your overall assessment of the season Babycakes. While Lorraine Toussaint is outstanding and I hope she is recognized for her performance, the story that she headlined made the show quite a bit darker without the levity that balanced the first season.
Spoilery thoughts:
I liked Daya and Bennett last season but the pregnancy storyline was completely ill-conceived. They should have just given Daya the miraculous furlough. I appreciate their attempts to redeem Daya but there is just no coming back from what they did with Pornstache. They are just not romantic.
The only thing less romantic than those two is Larry and Polly. Larry's return is a complete headscratcher.
I don't think I've ever been more scared of a fictional character as I was with Vee. She was terrifying and I appreciate that Toussaint was able to add complexity to her characterization despite the lack of any kind of sympathetic backstory. She managed to be both scary and human. I would have had a much harder time buying Taystee turning on Poussey if not for Toussaint's portrayal. Even as I shook my head when Vee faked a truce with Red, I couldn't blame her for falling for it.
I loved Morello's storyline. It was the part of this season's story that seemed most in keeping with last season. We had already gotten hints that she was living in a complete fantasy world so the stalking storyline made perfect sense. I was heartbroken for her every step of the way and I LOVED the scene when Suzanne comforted her.
Poor, poor Suzanne. She finally experienced what she thought was love, acceptance and belonging only to have it turn out to be one long con. Using Suzanne might well be the most unforgivable thing that Vee did. Everyone else had at least some sense of what a snake she was before getting entangled with her.
I loved Black Cindy's backstory. Definitely a case of loving the sinner and hating the sin. Unlike Taystee who always had a lot going for her but simply lacked opportunities, Black Cindy seems like she was always lost - somehow unable to find her way into adulthood.
Sophia and Nicky were underutilized this season and I am really not understanding why Pennsatuckey was kept around. Neither she or So So added anything to the season.
I loved Rosa's backstory but, embarrassingly, it took me a while to figure out just whose backstory it was. Finally it dawned on me that it took place during what appeared to be the 70s.
As corrupt and villainous as Figueroa was, I found that scene with Caputo very disturbing. After that sexual humiliation as punishment, I was actually glad that she got away with her shenanigans.
