Yeah, she doesn't do much for me talent wise. I love Big Bang Theory and she's awesome as the sort of straight person absorbing and reacting to all the crazy that the nerd scientists bring. But when it's time for Penny to shine on her own it doesn't happen. There was an episode a while back where she was cast as Blanche in a Streetcar Named Desire and Leonard, Sheldon and Amy go to see her. Well, she was acting so flat and passionless (and no Southern accent) that I thought the gang was going to say 'Wow, she better not quit her day job!'... but instead they were all going 'Wow, she's fabulous!' Even Sheldon was complimentary. So... it was written that Penny was supposed to be really good... and what Ms. Kaley was doing was really terrible. Like she had no understanding of who Blanche DuBois was or what Streetcar was all about. Hell, Marge Simpson did a better Blanche! It was painful and embarrassing to watch... esp. with the other cast members having to sell that their characters were just awestruck by Penny's talent.
So, no. Blonde and bubbly she's got. Anything else she couldn't sell me on. She doesn't even sell me in her numerous commercials. Why is she always so snippy towards William Shatner as they try to help people save money through Priceline? Why is she always so dour about granting people their wishes in the car commercials? It's like she's always the straight person surrounded by craziness even if she's a Secret Priceline Operative or a Wish Granting Genie.
And now can you not give Blanche DuBois a Southern Accent?!?!?!? She's the personification of the Old South! Trapped in a fantasy of everything that was supposedly grand and glorious now soured through disillusion and defeat. She probably one of the most charismatic and PASSIONATE characters ever created... and I know she wasn't really playing Blanche. She was playing Penny playing Blanche... But Penny was supposed to be GOOD!!
(Thanks for letting me get that off my chest)
