I finally saw this, yesterday. I'm still thinking about it.
That reminds me of the Daily Show's Jessica Williams responding to Paula Deen finding out her ancestors had 35 slaves. Thirty-five slaves is "a lot", but owning ONE human being is a lot!
I had a discussion with my mother about being born into slavery versus being forced into it as an adult. I agree that wanting freedom is a natural instinct to all human beings, whether or not they are born into captivity. Pasty's struggle was no less agonizing than Solomon's even though she was likely born on a platation, and was considered a "good" slave. But I imagine how harrowing it must have been to think back on your previous life and accepting this new reality.

I watched this movie this morning and if The Academy is just, Chiwetel should win the Best Actor Oscar. The movie didn't teach me anything new, but it was definitely brutal and a really important memorial of America's history with slavery.
Patsey is going to stay with me. I was so sad for her at the end and will be wondering what happened to her for the rest of my life.

We'll have to keep waiting since it's a British movie. Not sure if Hollywood is ready to go there yet. I couldn't believe that the actress who played Patsy is a) 30 years old and b) this was her first movie ever! First movie! How many big time celebs first movies are cover your eyes bad or borderline porn and she comes out swinging with this. I hope we see more of her.

On a purely shallow note, I cannot wait to see what Lupita brings to the red carpet for the upcoming awards season. She is STUNNING.

She has been kicking some red carpet ass with her simple yet gorgeous outfits. I wish I could pull off yellow like she can and wish I had the body and confidence to wear something like this without people pointing and laughing and mother's covering their children's eyes... Off to do more crunches.

Here's Yale historian David Blight in an interesting Fresh Air interview about TYAS and the topic of slavery in American culture.

Steve McQueen won the best director award from the New York Films Critic and was heckled by critic Armond White during his acceptance speech. He yelled out that he was a doorman and garbage man and cursed him when he accepted the award. This was after Harry Belafonte gave this really moving speech when he gave the award to McQueen about being colored then a negro then black and now African-American in his life time. White is known to be a total troll but still that is so disrespectful. I don't understand. I know some people thought the film was too brutal. I get that criticism although I do think the brutality was neccessary. But I mean its hardly like Crash winning best picture. Anyways Belafonte's speech was pretty awesome. Its a shame that is not what people are going to remember.

Ugh, how disgusting. White is a more than a troll, a clown, or a contrarian. He's the human equivalent of a turd in the punchbowl. I hope he gets kicked in the taint before falling down a steep flight of stairs.
