I went out late and caught this one Tuesday night. I was surprised how many people were there given that it was a "flop" according to the news.
It is a very good movie which could perhaps have been great if they had more time to think the story through.
For those who don't know it is the story of the earth which has been invaded and just about defeated by an alien horde which take the form of rolling spinning chomping monstrosities which seem to be defeating the armies of Europe and the US with alarming ease.
Enter Tom Cruise as a PR man - and non combative major in the army - who pisses off the wrong general and gets sent to the front to engage said enemy with the grunts in a very D-Day like invasion.
Also enter Emily Blunt who plays a female hero - super soldier - who recently has scored an impressive victory against the alien horde in France and is having her likeness and heroic deeds used as a poster girl for stirring up the resistance ....
The first 2/3 of the movie is great. I felt it was well thought out and well executed. It is the last third - and the ending mainly - which lets the rest of the movie down.
I don't want to give away plots or anything... however everyone probably knows by now.....




But Tom Cruise dies in the first 3 minutes of the first battle - mostly through ineptitude on his part and by chance during this battle something happens which causes him to re-live the day before the battle over and over again. Each time he does he gets the chance to train/think/plot on how to fight better and live longer and longer and to earn the trust of those who can help him ....
I would heartily recommend this one - even with the bad ending - as it is very watchable and even is rated PG-13.

The reviews were pretty good, but it didn't do well. I blame Tom Cruise; with a different actor in the same movie, it probably would have done well.

Too bad for Emily Blunt, since I like her and I like a movie where the woman is the badass.

This movie sounds good enough to make me wish I didn't hate Tom Cruise so much that his very presence ruins the whole experience. As in, I hate his stupid, grinning face so much that the words "starring Tom Cruise" are enough to make me stay away. On the other hand, Emily Blunt is the shit, and I want to see her crush it in this movie. Damn you, Tom Cruise. Just go away.

So who should they have cast? Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg? Or maybe Blunt should have had the lead.

I really liked it, but mainly for Emily Blunt. It's like a sci-fi Groundhog Day.

I loved how Emily's character was a modern day Joan of Arc, right down to wearing armor, wielding a sword (of sorts), and having visions that made people think she was crazy. Her

were pretty cool.

He is a crazy loon and belongs to a dangerous cult, but Tom Cruise knows how to bring it in an action movie. I forgot how much he annoyed me. If you don't want to pay full price at the theater, it's definitely worth a rental.

If the premise of the story would hold up after eliminating the male lead character, then Blunt being the lead character would have been great. But if not, then anyone but Tom, really. Hell, Bradley Cooper would have been a wiser choice.

Ya'll know I am not a Tammy fan, but I loved this movie. I think it's because Tom dies over and over again in perverse ways. I laughed a lot! This isn't really the post couch jumping Tom Cruise we've come to expect in recent years. This is 80s and 90s Cruise. I want to see it again (ending an all)

I really liked this and honestly I thought Tom Cruise was perfect in the role. He especially nailed the insincere weasel part at the beginning of the movie. I am not a fan of Cruise, in fact I actively avoid his movies unless it gets really good reviews as in this case or something is playing on cable on a lazy Sunday afternoon. And then whenever I watch one of his movies I am always surprised that he is good. He's a decent actor and does have some charisma if you can get past his massive baggage. I doubt I'll go out of my way to see more of his movies in the future but I won't avoid them if the premise sounds good.

Emily Blunt was awesome. I have been a fan of hers since The Devil Wears Prada but I never thought she could do an action role. I also loved Bill Paxton's accent. He sounded like a looney tunes character.


I get the schadenfreude involved in Tom Cruise having a movie that bombs but I am disappointed it did not do better just because it is one of the rare summer movies that is not a sequel or superhero movie. I know its based on a Japanese graphic comic and has influences of earlier movies but still it is relatively original.

Also not sure if I liked the ending. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either.

Besides the ending, I really enjoyed this (seeing it at half price down south didn't hurt!). Like, Cruise was appropriately funny at times--amazing! I'm a fan of Doug Liman's and I'm glad this turned out well (imo). Emily Blunt was great as well. I'd love to know the filming process of a film like this or Memento, etc.

eta: I didn't hate the ending, it was just very neat.

I believe this movie is based on a book called All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
