The movie opened at #1 with $48 million last weekend. There was a big rush factor Friday, but it's held pretty well during the week so far. There's a bit of drama about the sequence at the Anne Frank House (spoiler alert). The book at least points out that Spoiler "Anne Frank, after all, kissed someone in the Anne Frank House" but it seems like inserting the memory of such a historical figure into your own work is a rather easy way to aim for sentiment and poignancy. But it is a story about kids with cancer falling in love, so maybe that goes with the territory.

Vulture had a funny article about Gus calling him a manic pixie dream guy and made a pretty good case of it. Now I kind of want to see the movie to see if he's really that bad.

I finally watched this movie, and I couldn't wait for it to end. And I guess I must be evil, because I didn't shed one tear. I seriously couldn't stand Augustus.

I just watched it on a plane, and Gus was smug, with sausage lips. But Shailene Woodley is a good actress - I'll give her that. The story was schmaltzy. I had read the book and quite liked it, but the movie, not so much.
