Hi everyone, I'm up in the middle of the night so rather than watching cheesy television, I decided to explore some new features for the board. You'll now notice that you have the ability to comment on someone's post right in their post. This is helpful for fast-moving threads where future comments require quoting old posts. It will look like this: Please reserve this option for simple comments to other people's posts. If you want to extend the conversation beyond a sentence or two, please continue to use the quote function and reply with a new post as usual. Let's try this out and see how it works. Post your feedback here. You'll also notice a new smiling face icon to the right of the posts, just before the "like" icon - this will let you LOL at a post in addition to being able to like it. Please note that currently there is no notification system for when someone LOLs your post (like there is when someone likes it) but I'm working on that.

I love the new LOL button but that little comment box? I think it's going to slow the board down if you have to scroll past an entire conversation in one post.
Not to mention how clunky it looks and it must double the length of the page and add to the time the page takes to load.
I'm sorry, Oxynia. I'm sure it was a lot of work to program but I think it looks awful.

Also, neither of the changes show up in the mobile version of the site. I'm frequently on here via my iPhone so they seem kind of pointless.

We don't have the means to program the mobile version of the site, that is still under the control of ProBoards. Still waiting for that to change, and there is no ETA for when that will happen, sadly.
I thought we would give the comment bar a go to see how it works before deciding on whether to make it permanent or not. I was skeptical as well but figure a real-world experiment would be better than theory. Keep your comments coming, we do want to know how you all feel about it.

I feel awkward about saying anything negative, but I don't like it. I can't like the comments, and it's confusing to me. When do I use the comment box? When do I make a new comment? I also don't care for the way it looks.

Yes--apologies for joining the negative chorus, but I've already seen one comment in the 'box' that 1) I think merited its own post and 2) I would like to respond to but because it's in the comment 'area' it feels visually awkward. I guess I don't completely understand what goes there versus what is just not worth a post versus what is its own short post, if that makes sense.
I do appreciate the lol feature, though, thank you for that! And I very much appreciate your willingness to look for and incorporate new features that we might like.

Another question occurred to me...
When someone clicks on the 'new' button on a thread, will they be taken to new posts and miss all those comments, or will they be taken to the new comments which may be a page or so away from the new replies on the thread?

Another negative, besides the ones already given (which I agree with 100%) is you don't get a notification if someone responds to you in the comment bar. So you have to go back to your old comments to see if anyone responded. That seems awkward and increases the chances of not responding to someone.

OK thanks for the feedback, we want this place to be enjoyable and intuitive. If something we come up with doesn't serve that goal, then we scrap it. It's as simple as that. Don't feel bad saying negative things, it's honest opinion and that's what we care about.
So we'll drop the comment box and go back to regular posting of replies. We'll keep investigating ways to improve the board and will look for your input as always.
