I know this doesn't count, but the only person I can think of is Pope Francis being a Franciscan instead of a Jesuit, and he's been shaking up the church like nobody's business. Pope Francis actually is a Jesuit, the first Jesuit Pope in fact. He chose a Franciscan name to symbolize unifying the philosophies of both orders. He's also the first Pope to be from Latin America.

I'm such a bad Catholic.... and I should know that since I was educated by the Jesuits! Thank you for correcting me.

I'm Catholic and I have several Catholic coworkers, so it was a big topic of discussion when he first became Pope.

That is so sad. I hope they can find out what happened to the author and if he had any surviving relatives.

From the semi-forgotten presidents file--Warren G. Harding's DNA reveals a few things. Link to NY Times. Spoiler: {Spoiler}His alleged love child was proved to be his, and DNA testing also discounted the stories that he has black or African ancestry.

Is it too late to impeach him? There really should be a club for the descendants of presidential love children. Thomas Jefferson's descendants would obviously be the presidents.

There's nowhere else that this really fits, so I'll post it here. Someone I know and generally like as a colleague issued forth these three tidbits today: disappointment that US Southern literature is no longer being taught much (which I would vehemently dispute, but whatever), that something was scheduled for January 19th, also known as Robert E. Lee's birthday, and unprompted self-identifying as an 'unreconstructed Southerner.' By themselves, or even together, the first two items are random facts and/or observations. I know when a lot of famous people's birthdays are, it's random trivia. But ugh. What. Why? I haven't heard anyone use the unreconstructed line since ca. 2007 (except when I used it once myself to ask about a different person), and it's just...ugh. Ugh. UGH!
All I could really do in the moment was say, "well, I can't say that's a day I observe," which earned the reply, "well, that's fine--I'll observe it for both of us!" I'm not good about breathing fire, and when people are outright wrong about data and facts, I can deal, but I don't know how much of this is just a matter of opinion. I think it's toxic. Also, do I look like I'm some sort of safe space for people to vent this?
So, actual question: how can I be proactive about this sort of thing? Or anything similar? Is it really just a matter of opinion?
