I just saw this, and I read the book before. But I didn't read it until a few months ago, so I pictured Affleck and Pike in the roles. I loved the book. It was so fun to read. I enjoyed the movie, but I enjoyed the book much more. I feel like the movie reduced Amy to an unsympathetic psycho. They were both terrible people, but in the movie, Affleck was fairly likable, definitely more so than Pike. Good points. I was also thinking that I loathed Nick much more, and rooted for Amy more, in the book. Nick's character really benefits from being a bit one-dimensional, like in the film, while Amy is more... maybe not likable, but at least sympathetic, as a literary protagonist when her motives and perspective on things are presented more clearly than they could be within the confines of a film.

That's interesting magazinewhore & madefortv. I read the book in one fell swoop (more or less) when it first came out. I loved it. To me, both Nick and Amy suck as people - and I think that's the point. They deserve each other! My mother read the book after my glowing recommendation, but thought Amy was a ****, and hated the book with a passion. We both saw the movie this weekend, and surprisingly, my mother loved it. She thought Amy was more likeable this time around. I thought Gillian did a fantastic job translating her book to the screen. I feel like a Ben apologist, but I like him (even with all the Gwyneth, JLo, gambling, drinking and cheating drama that seems to follow him), so I don't understand the flack he's getting for playing Nick. In the book thread, Greecies pictured Patrick Wilson and Charlize Theron as Nick and Amy, but I think Ben and Rosamund did fabulous jobs. I love the actresses who played 'Go', the detective. I know I've seen them in other things, but I appreciated the fact that they were unfamiliar to me. I even liked Tyler Perry. Go figure. Also, Emily whats-her-face from "Blurred Lines" ably did what was required from her, but it seems like she was only there to show her perfect boobs. I guess little Ben was supposed to be seen in the shower scene??? I didn't see it, and I'm okay with that. I think this movie works whether you read the book or not. I highly recommend. I'll definitely see it again before it leaves the theaters.

I've never been to one, either, although this is not surprising in light of the fact that I get to a movie theater maybe every three years. (The last film I saw in one was Skyfall, for anyone who's interested.) You're doing better than me. The last movie I saw in a theater was Avatar. I just remembered that we saw Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing in a theater last summer, so I am doubly impressed by your record, GOGR!

LOL, and it's not like I'm trying to be that guy/gal who's all "ugh, I NEVER go to the theater for a movie," it's just that lately I've been criminally lazy about non-work-related activities that require me to put on pants and leave the house.

I really enjoyed the book, although I wanted Nick and Amy to die in a fire by the last page.
Someone mentioned that reading the books made the movie less suspenseful, and I agree. Also, Ben wasn't convincing as someone who is possibly dangerous. While reading the book, I pictured Patrick Wilson.
Tyler Perry surprised me the most. I thought he was great.

... and did anyone notice her ex even saying she had the "ass of a 20-year-old stripper"? Did Affleck have them throw in a shout-out to the Goop herself? I was just coming here to post that... I wasn't sure if I had misunderstood. And silly me forgot the Ben Affleck connection and was wondering if David Fincher was somehow connected to Goop! I just saw it today and I haven't read the book. I really had no clue what was coming and I really enjoyed it.

I loved the movie and thought she was really great at the end, but I didn't enjoy her in the role at the very beginning. That very deliberate speech pattern grated on me in the earliest narration scenes. But she played the crazy lady to perfection at the end.
I thought he was great too, I loved his line about the two of them being the most fucked up people he'd ever met.
My favorite character, though, was that awesome orange cat. The shot of the cat posing regally in front of Amy in the kitchen at the end was perfect, the whole theater burst out laughing.

I was thinking that the cat must have been really well-trained. Most cats don't let you hold them like a baby. (One of my cats lets me hold him like that, but starts getting squirmy after less than 30 seconds)
On a totally different note, I really don't get the hype over Emily Ratajkowski. I don't even think she was one of the top 5 most attractive women in the film. (Sela Ward on the other hand, who's at least twice her age, looked amazing)
