The film critic I heard this morning said he hadn't read the book, so had no idea how the story would turn out. Because of that, he said he was at the edge of his seat for the entire movie. He gave it 4 1/2 stars out of 5. So I'm thinking it might be even more awesome not knowing the story. I barely knew anything about the story and it definitely made it better for me. I'm terrible about spoilering myself so I did myself a favor by keeping myself in the dark. I totally caught this and wondered the same thing! In all, I really enjoyed the movie but it did make me stick to my opinion that Ben's not that great of an actor. He wasn't terrible, he just wasn't great. He doesn't really inhabit his characters; he just recites their lines. I thought Rosamund Pike acted circles around him.

Saw this tonight and agree it was excellent. In a lot of ways, it was better than the book--which I actually wish I hadn't read as I think the movie would've been much more suspenseful if I had no idea about the twists.
I said from the get-go to friends who disagreed that I thought Affleck was the perfect choice for the husband. Glad I don't have to eat my words. I mean, who better to play a shady asshole than a, well...no, no, I do like Ben, but yeah, the part was made for him. And I wouldn't be surprised if Rosamund Pike gets an Oscar nom for this. She played Amazing(ly crazy) Amy to a tee.

Saw this tonight and really enjoyed it. I hadn't read the book, but I read a detailed plot summary a long time ago so I knew about the main plot twist already.

I think Ben played Nick Dunne to perfection. He wasn't supposed to be a great actor, that was his fault, not knowing how to act appropriately for the situation he was in. The scene with the Frito Pie lady was perfect. The trying to look like I care about Amy faces were perfect.
The actress playing Go was spot on. The casting was so great, everyone was cast perfectly for each role.
Rosamund Pike, at first I had doubts about her playing Amy. However, I was wrong. There isn't any other actress I can think of, who could've played that role better. Reese Witherspoon? No, no, no. Rosamund was/is Amy Elliott Dunne.
I do wish Amy's father was portrayed by someone else. I didn't picture him that frail.
Tyler Perry acted more believable in this movie than I've ever seen him in one of his own movies.
Lastly, Rosamund should get a Oscar nod, if not an Oscar. She was Amy Dunne.

Tyler Perry acted more believable in this movie than I've ever seen him in one of his own movies. Oh, man, he was so good! I crinkled my nose at his casting, but he nailed it.

I was thinking that if things had gone another way, Reese and Ryan would have been perfect. With Ben as Nick it's obvious from the beginning that he was innocent but if anyone has possible killer/abusive jackass face, it's Ryan Philippe.

Yeah. I didn't buy Ben for one second in the role, as a book reader. He had the smarm down, but you had to have been able to believe that he would have hurt her.

Just came back from seeing it and thought it was awesome. Ben Affleck does a great job portraying the smarmy douchebag (is it considered acting when you're playing yourself, though?) and Rosamund Pike is excellent as his frosty wife. I thought the actress' slight British-isms worked well for the cultured and upper-crust Amy.
And for all the dark subject matter, the movie also contains some great humor!
I think Gone Girl has a good chance at getting Oscar noms but I don't think it'll win the top prize. David Fincher's movies are downright frigid, which the Academy never seems to fully love.

I just saw this, and I read the book before. But I didn't read it until a few months ago, so I pictured Affleck and Pike in the roles. I loved the book. It was so fun to read. I enjoyed the movie, but I enjoyed the book much more. I feel like the movie reduced Amy to an unsympathetic psycho. They were both terrible people, but in the movie, Affleck was fairly likable, definitely more so than Pike.

I've never been to one, either, although this is not surprising in light of the fact that I get to a movie theater maybe every three years. (The last film I saw in one was Skyfall, for anyone who's interested.) You're doing better than me. The last movie I saw in a theater was Avatar.
