I think it was just carelessness. Eastwood has a reputation for doing very fast shoots because he's impatient and doesn't like having to do eight hundred takes of a scene. Great for the actors, bad sometimes for production.

Haven't seen the movie, but the fake baby is making the rounds on social media so I've seen that thing. WTH? They had to have been planning to reshoot those scenes and ran out of time or something.

I don't think so. As Baby Fish Mouth said above, Clint is known for his impatience and very rarely does more than one take. He supposedly insisted on using a doll because A) a real baby would have ruined his precious "one and done" shooting style and B) he's too cheap to get an animatronic baby or a puppet.

According to one of the writers, real baby #1 showed up sick and backup baby #2 didn't show up at all, so they had to improvise with the doll. Clint shoots fast, so I guess he didn't want to wait. Can you imagine that conversation on the set that day?
Producer: We've got a problem. Baby 1 is sick and Baby 2 is MIA. Clint: (with narrowed eyes and clenched teeth) Well fuck me. Where's my assistant? Assistant: Sir? Clint: Go to Toys 'r Us and get me a baby doll ASAP! Where's Cooper? Bradley Cooper: Hey Clint, what's up? Clint: We can't use a real baby. We're going with a doll instead. Bradley: What's the budget on this movie again? Clint: I've got no more fucks to give. Be an actor and improvise!

Oh my gosh, I just googled "American Sniper Fake Baby" and found a clip. I can't believe they released the movie like that. Perhaps BC does indeed deserve that Oscar. Holy cow that was bad.

Bradley was really good (and HAWT!!!) but it was kind of rote. Tour of Duty / "whiny" wife / Look of PTSD for the horror of war / Tour of Duty. Rinse. Repeat.
I wanted to know more about his life state-side.
