I am surprised I searched and there is no thread for this movie. It has grossed over $140 million so it must have been something of a hit. I just went to see this tonight and thought it was pretty good, but too long by about 20 min. As everyone should know by now it is a musical and as such has several original songs in it. What I didn't know was that the play that it was based on originally came out in 1987! Basically it is kind of a mishmash of the old Grimm's Fairy tales characters all put together in one story where they all interact with each other and the story cleverly puts the central parts of each of their stories/characters into one central theme. I appreciated that it was original in its execution and based on that alone it gets a thumbs up from me. The audience - about 1/3 full - seemed a bit lost. I wouldn't say that they hated it, but there was a lot of head scratching going on after it ended.

I really wanted to like this movie but didn't and I don't understand Meryl Streep's award nomination for it.

I didn't love it, but didn't hate it either.
It seemed like a lot of the strong roles (Blunt, Streep) did well in their parts, but it wasn't enough to sustain the overall enjoyment of the film. That being said, I did enjoy Chris Pine and his solo (then duet with his on-screen brother) at the river/falls. The audience was in stitches and Pine is a nice drink of water...so I'll go to a movie just to watch him.

Chris was great, but his hair was horrible. I don't understand Meryl's nomination either. I think people see Meryl and throw a nomination at her regardless of the finished product. And how can you have first billing, then be supporting?
The movie's SO long, and when I mention that, people say they cut at least 30 minutes out of the play. I truly think you can wait until this comes to video.

I am finally watching this. We did this musical in High School in 93, when it was still unheard of, and I played Snow White and extra background vocals behind the scenes. Typecasting for my pale skin and dark hair!! I'm pretty sure that part was cut from the movie. But I did have kids asking to take their picture with me as Snow White. So I have strong feelings about this musical.
Man, the first 15 minutes are making my stomach hurt with memories. So far so good. I'm impressed with the proper amount of singing based on the musical book. Gives me hopes for things like Hamilton.
I would recommend anyone trying to find the broadway filmed version with Bernadette Peters. It's amazing.

God I feel like an idiot. I just saw part of the Tonys and realized that James Corden - the host - was the Baker in this movie! I still have no idea who he is outside of those karaoke car things he does. That is too funny.
