I'm pretty sure Adam Driver has stated several times in the past that he has an absolute phobia of watching himself perform, or hearing himself sing, which the NPR folks knew, and decided to "mitigate" by saying "you can take your headphones off here". I think it comes under the heading "mental health issue", and it's shocking the number of people who are dismissing him as an entitled, rich, white male. I have severe anxiety and chronic depression. However, there are times when I have to give speeches and days when I have to network with people and I don't want to. But I do it. And I find ways to handle it. Different techniques I've worked on with a therapist. And to be honest, sometimes it doesn't work but most of the time it does. I have to do my job because people are counting on me. So I have a deep understanding of mental illness. You can't use it as an excuse all the time. I mean he was in the military! I think he can handle the pressure.

This plus if it's so serious that it's a mental health issue/phobia he might want to rethink his career choice. What if he's in a bar and a commercial for "Marriage Story" comes on? What if he's walking through Times Square and he shows up on one of those giant screens? All the years that "Girls" was on did he never watch anything else on HBO in case he came across a promo? I believe most actors don't get into it to become so famous that they have no life. But nobody becomes an actor so their work can never be seen by anyone, including themselves.

I don’t have much to add to the conversation but thought I’d share that I like to annoy my husband and son by referring to his Star Wars character as Rylo Ken. I messed the name up once and they made fun of me so now I do it on purpose and it makes me laugh. Ah, the simple joys in life.
I did like the SNL skit on Undercover Boss he did in character

I guess my thoughts are that just like in any field, he’s probably reached a level when he can make demands/stipulations that he couldn’t make when he wasn’t famous or a sought-after actor. But now I’d say he’s a big enough actor that he can say that he doesn’t want to watch or hear himself in interviews. If he were an unknown and walked out, yes there would probably be consequences. It doesn’t bother me and I don’t feel like it’s my place to judge his level of mental illness and whether he should/shouldn’t have sat through the interview when he was uncomfortable. He didn’t hurt anyone; if anything, it just garners more publicity for his movie.

I did like the SNL skit on Undercover Boss he did in character I loved that one too. Yes, I was surprised to see such a vigorous defense of him on Twitter. I am sympathetic to introvert and shyness issues, but I feel like this is just one of the things about his particular job that requires a "suck it up, buttercup" attitude. Every job has something about it that is unpleasant, but you get through it because you are a mature adult and a professional. I'm still a fan, I'm not cancelling him, but the reaction is odd. That's exactly my feeling. I'm not cancelling him because he had a diva moment (although I think the reason why actors evolve into insufferable brats over time is because these diva moments are indulged and chalked up to genius, so he definitely could wind up in Sean Penn-ville eventually.) His Oscar campaign will be totally unharmed. But I do believe that if this were an actress, she would now have a reputation for having an attitude problem and her Oscar campaign would be in serious jeopardy right now.

What's his plan for the Oscars? They like to play clips!

I am more sympathetic because I have to listen to myself on my recording app for work and it is awful. Awful. I dread doing it and procrastinate every time. But I am biased because I think he is a fantastic actor and admire his work with veterans.

I would never presume to tell someone what kind of pressure I think they "can handle". He calls it a phobia of watching himself perform or sing, not anxiety about networking with people. I mean, Nicole Kidman says she has a phobia about butterflies. Is the next interviewer gonna fill the room with butterflies and say "she should suck it up" when she flees in terror?

I think this is all moot since he wasn't required to watch or listen to himself. NPR accommodated his "phobia".

When I hear my voice I actually wonder what's wrong with all of my friends and anyone who ever willingly chooses to be around me on a regular basis. I've even been complimented on my voice here and there. What is wrong with you people?
