Ok let me start this by saying if you have never watched the TV show or you didn't like the TV show (a bunch of spoiled rich boys?) then you should not go to see this movie. It has nothing for you.
This movie is basically a final victory*(see note at end of rant) lap for HBO and a money grab to boot. It is a long episode of the show which is shown on the big screen - nothing more, nothing less.
The plot:
Vince has broken up with his wife (from the last episode of the show - but who remembers that?) the day after his wedding (she is never shown) and has just been signed onto a new Movie called Hyde - which he will direct as well as star in as Ari Gold's first movie as new head of a studio. The problem is they are out of money and are forced to go back to a rich Texan backer(Billy Bob Thorton) in order to ask for more money (they have been back to get funds previously) and they have not shown the Texan any of the scenes yet. The Texan balks and insists that his son return with them to see the rough cut first before he gives any more money.
The rest of the movie deals with the "tensions" of getting the movie made and all of the guy's usual BS they get involved in.
So then on to the movie.
What was good:
1) Ari - Jeremy Piven has been one of the only reasons to watch this show. He actually is a talented actor and his character - although he can chew too much scenery at times - is always solid. The show should have been about him from the beginning. He brings it here.
2) Drama - I have never seen Kevin Dillon in anything but Platoon back in the 80s he is also good here. He was always the only real character to me on the show. An actor, flawed, vain, insecure and at the same time narcissistic and hungry. (whether is it for the next role, girl or calf muscle implant).
3) the locations - there are some hot scenes out on the water and in some fabulous houses, offices etc. I always liked this part of the show as it is just trappings at their finest.
4) The new car. Briefly the guys are seen driving a new convertible instead of the older original Continental. The new car is a 4 door Cadillac Ciel convertible and it possibly is one of the finest convertibles you have ever seen in your life. It looks like a futuristic concept car and is so fabulous looking I would gladly ride in this thing with the top down across the United States it is so nice looking.
What was bad.
1) Just about every other actor. It is probably not a coincidence that almost none of these guys have been seen in anything else since the show ended 4 years ago.
E - is caught up in "drama" with his baby mama and his love life. Turtle - is now rich? and chasing a female UFC fighter (who wouldn't last 30 seconds in a real acting class), Vince - this actor still cannot act and just walks around banging women and commenting on everyone's life (just like in the TV show)
Lloyd has a small part but despite having probably the only come to Jesus moment for another character (Ari), he is played only for a gay wedding gag with a celebrity athlete he is marrying. No spoilers - I didn't recognize his spouse until the end of the movie.
2) Way too many cameos. The movie literally wastes shots to just show what must have been 50 cameos of famous people - most of whom I have never heard of before. They actually underutilize the good cameo actors (David Spade, John Favreau, Gary Busey, Bob Saget) and spread them out with all of the other dreck wasting probably a good 10 min of film time.
3) The story is awful. Are we to believe that Ari would have come back to be studio head and for his first huge movie (which will make or break him) chooses this movie Hyde - and have Vinne Chase direct ? It would never happen. There is this supposed "tense" scene when Ari finally gets to see a rough cut of the unfinished movie - that he has spent $100 million on but heretofore never seen (yeah right) - and it is simply awful! I mean it is laughably horrible. But get this - everyone else - including Ari - thinks it is the greatest movie since sliced bread.
Seriously the movie was so bad I thought it would have ended Ari's career.
Hyde movie summary.
Vince plays a famous DJ who has a mechanical arm/hand sometime in the future who while dj'ing a rave - with the police/authorities banging at the doors - pulls out a big batch of glowing yellow gumdrops which he puts into his mechanical arm and shoots out over the audience at his rave. They catch the gumdrops in their mouths and the gumdrops turns all the ravers into a kind of zombie army to fight the police/army attackers.
I am not kidding. It was only later when I read about it on another forum after I saw the movie that I found out "Hyde" was supposed to be a new take on "Jekyll and Hyde" of Robert Louis Stevenson fame. Horrible! Seriously laughably horrible.
I won't spoil how the movie ends - but if you have ever watched the show you already know.
Well there you have it.
If you liked the show go see it - if not then stay away.
Shallow, sexist random observations:
Debi Mazar - who I always thought was unconventionally good looking has aged horribly. She looks terrible and has aged poorly in real life.
Perri Reaves - who plays misses Ari who I thought was hot in the show is the poster girl for what happens to actresses who starve themeselves or workout too much. Just not that attractive anymore.
Constance Zimmer - Dana Gordon who I have had a crush on since she was on that other terrible TV show about the weather/news place in Florida (remember the one with the nun?) has either had some work done, or is just ageing badly. Either way - yikes.
Ed O'Neill - looks like the grand dad of Ed O'Neill I didn't even recognize his cameo. What happened to this dude?
* From what I have read this movie is basically one of the Summer's first flops. This doesn't surprise me as I never thought the TV show had that large of an audience.
