The girlfriend is on a plane out of the country so I had to pick something to watch by myself.
I picked Mr Holmes despite the fact that I have heard nothing about this movie up till now.
I really enjoyed this. There were about 25 people in the theater and one was a family traveling on vacation with cousins, sisters, brothers etc who filled almost an entire row with the avg age of the kids around 12 or 13.
At first i thought they had come into the wrong theater but they sat quietly and seemed to enjoy this one too.
This is a small sit down and enjoy type picture.
Sherlock Holmes has retired and is living out his existence in the British Countryside at 92 and he is losing his facilities at an alarming rate. He has gotten to the point that he has to write people's names on his shirt cuffs in order to get their names straight.
He is haunted by his final case which he never solved which involved a man who came to him for help because of his wife's strange behavior.
The problem is he cannot remember the case clearly and spends the remainder of the movie struggling with old memories and health issues while trying desperately to hold onto his facilites. The movie handles these well and Ian McKellen handles the part beautifully and goes from 60 year old Holmes to 92 year old Holmes and back again with aplomb.
The supporting cast is great too with Laura Linney playing his housekeeper and a young actor playing her son who strikes up a friendship with Holmes as he tries to help him close his final case.
I don't want to give too much away at this point but the story is not a quick one but it is told wonderfully.
Basically if you don't think you will like this type of movie (slow character build, tension builds, no action just a good story) then you should not go.
If however, you think you like this sort of movie or are a fan of McKellen, then IMHO you should go see it.
