Really? What the the heck?
Yes, it was created to be an interpretation of the original through the lens of urban, African American culture, struggles, and experiences.
I wonder if these people would be scandalized seeing an all black cast take the stage for Black Nativity too.

I thought it was a lot of fun and way better than Peter Pan and Sound of Music. Loved the costumes and makeup except for the scarecrow. He looked like he was wearing a mask of someone else's skin. Agreed there were way too many commercial breaks. I also wished that they had a live audience. Some of those numbers deserved a standing O.
I had not seen the Wiz before either as a play or the movie. But I was reading a review saying they made a lot of smart updates. They have definitely set the bar high for the next live musical. It's a different network but Grease is going to suck.

Yeah, it would have been nice to have that immediate reaction from a live audience. I think it would have boosted the energy even more.
Side note - I loved that everyone in the Emerald City was voguing. It was all Paris is Burning up in there. Also, I need to pay more attention to Ne-Yo because I really liked his performance. And Elijah Kelley, despite the Jame Gumb skin mask.

I read something about Twitter being abuzz with complaints about no white cast members, but isn't that The Wiz's thing? Really? People tweeted that? Bye, Felicia!

Loved it! My 82-year-old dad was bopping along, and he hates anything pop-like. Queen Latifah was perfect- heck, everyone was perfectly cast.

Oh good gravy! That was WONDERFUL!!! Yes, way too many commercials. But the show itself was worth the wait in between. I'd only ever seen the movie (which is surprisingly BAD) and one very amateurish stage production- which was quite good for what it was. So this took my breath away! I remembered the dancing poppies from the stage show I saw, but this one had dancing storm clouds! And the wire work!! I wasn't expecting to see Dorothy or the house literally twisting in the wind. WOW! And then the crows and the winged warriors flying and bouncing around! Damn, I would have loved to have seen that live in a theater! But on TV will do!! The set designs were so impressive! Munchkin land looked a little sparse and hokie, but everything else was magnificent!! Esp. the giant Wiz head and the Wiz's palace. That was great! And the costumes!! GORGEOUS!! Really the only thing that bugged me was the Scarecrow's Leatherface looking mask covering up Elijah Kelly's gorgeousness and one other thing which I will mention in a bit. But everything else was just so beautiful!! I sobbed when the witch's workers shed their brown rags for sunshine yellow! And the Emerald City outfits were Disco-rific!! The performances AHHHHHHH!!! SOOOO GOOOD!!! Every single person brought there A game and gave it their all. There was not a single time when I was cringing from secondhand embarrassment or wondering what the hell they were thinking when the cast so and so (Sound of Music and Peter Pan productions, I'm looking at you!!) Queen Latifah was awesome... but I was expecting that. Mary J. Blige- I'd never seen her play anything but herself. And she was AMAZING!!! She was such a great Wicked Witch! You could tell she was loving every second of it. I was enjoying watching her so much I got sad when Dorothy picked up the bucket. AHHH!! Everyone was so good!! I loved DAG occationally channeling Burt Larr when he said 'Courage' Ne-Yo was an adorable Tin Man and Elijah Kelly, my baby doll! Dead skin mask and all, he can MOVE! Loved his Scarecrow! Common was hilarious. Ok, I'm not familiar with the woman who was Dorothy but she was great too. And I was most excited about Uzo Aduba as Glinda... and I didn't realize there was another good witch besides Glinda. I didn't remember that from the movie or the stage production I saw. So that confused me at first. And then I was so wrapped up in the rest of the production, I actually forgot that she'd be coming until the very end and then I got all excited again!! And then she finally appeared........ In a dress made out of Big Bird's attic insulation?!?!?!?!? Waaaaaahhhh? Ermm.... ok.... Terrifying dress.... But her HAIR looked great! And Boy HOWDY can she BELT!! GUSH!!! I LOVE HER!!! Her dress will haunt my nightmares tonight. But I LOVE her! Worth the wait!! SO GOOD!!! So happy NBC finally got it right!! Big smile on my face! Mild fear Uzo's dress will eat us all. But big smile other than that! YAY Wiz!!
