Idrissa Akuna "Idris" Elba, OBE (/ˈɪdrəs ˈɛlbə/; born 6 September 1972) is a British actor, musician, and DJ. He is best known for his portrayal of drug lord and aspiring businessman Russell "Stringer" Bell in the HBO series The Wire, Detective John Luther in the BBC One series Luther, and Nelson Mandela in the 2013 biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. He has been nominated five times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film, winning one, as well being nominated four times for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Elba has appeared in films such as American Gangster (2007), Takers (2010), Thor (2011), Prometheus (2012), Pacific Rim (2013), Thor: The Dark World (2013), and Beasts of No Nation (2015). In addition to his acting work, he is a DJ under the moniker DJ Big Driis (or Big Driis the Londoner) and hip hop soul musician.

The 43-year-old actor won big that evening — he took home two acting awards for his work on Luther and Beasts of No Nation! Congrats to Idris on the big wins!

After winning two awards himself, the 43-year-old actor got up on stage to present a clip from his movie Beasts of No Nation and said, “Welcome to diverse TV.”

Definitely. I just loathe that there's dissenters that are questioning why he won. I know that he's use to that kind of talk, and unfortunately it will probably always happen.

His wins make so much sense though. His only competition for Best Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries was Mark Rylance since everyone else in that category was a respected name but in an awful movie/miniseries or in Bill Murray's case, in something that would never win and he's lucky to have been nominated on his name and respect. However, Rylance is still pretty unknown actor, and Luther has been on for awhile now, and Elba has been wracking up nominations and wins at several big award shows.

With his win for Beasts of No Nation, in hindsight, it's not too much of a surprise since he and Bale were the only two nominees whose films were nominated for Best Ensemble. Plus, Netflix was behind BONN, and while they didn't break into the Oscars this year, they've been very adept at running campaigns for other major award shows. Villainous performances also usually do very well in the male supporting acting category, and I do think that if another studio like Fox Searchlight or SPC had campaigned BONN, Elba probably would have swept since it looks like he'll be a favorite to win BAFTA too.
