The corona around the sun has lots of light coming out of it. But If you are in the path of totality, you can look at it directly for a few seconds, while it's in it's total state, I believe. It's all the other people that it is actually the most dangerous for. If there is even a sliver of light showing your pupils will be huge, and that sliver will burn your retinas.

OMG, chonies, that made me guffaw.
What do all the other countries around the world do? Or for the hundreds of years in the past? This is the first time in North America in decades, but solar eclipses happen a lot more often around the entire globe.
The pupil explanation makes sense to me too. I just worry about my 6 year old, but I do concede that everything America related right now seems very hysteria-prone. I blame Trump, clearly.

I will admit, smitten, that if it were my kid and I was in charge of safeguarding it's little eyeballs, my attitude would be a lot less cavalier.

I thought the eclipse glasses were necessary only because you are going to be looking at the sun way more/longer than you would be normally and staring at the sun is always bad for your eyes, not because the sun will suddenly achieve mystical powers.
It is very cloudy and rainy here and we're not in the totality so I think it's going to be a bit anticlimactic. I'm disappointed!

Clear skies here in Seattle. I am pumped!
Mr. Cholo wanted to go to Einstein bagels first then watch it from Gasworks Park. I said no, I am not at all sure about all the crazy traffic rushing around. My plan is to watch it from the park across the street that will have a nice clear view.

My eclipse glasses are really cute. Now I need to get my lunch taco so I can use the foil to make my pinhole viewer.

Hope eclipse watchers get to see something (carefully) im not sure whos heard or not heard this tune Total Eclipse of the heart! but I had to and I'm not sorry😎 Have fun!! Sky news are of course running a live report from Oregon. I can join in a bit we might get to see a partial eclipse here if the more traditional method of blocking the sun(cloud cover) gets out of the way!

Boston is nowhere near the totality path (I think we're in the 50%-ish range) but people are still going nuts out here. Thanks to the media, everyone thinks the library is giving away free eclipse glasses when in reality we have a limited amount that people have to share during our eclipse program.
I'm mainly annoyed about it though because I was visiting my friend in Oregon last week and she lives a couple miles away from the totality path. Timing has never been my strong suit.
