Saw it last night and I liked it more than I didn't. Definitely atmospheric, though the pacing was off several times. Great acting from the entire ensemble, save Ellen Fanning--I found her performance to be too over the top.

Saw it today and had pretty much the opposite reaction: was very underwhelmed and thought Elle Fanning was quite good, but, yikes, Kirsten Dunst was...not good.

Glad someone else noticed that Kirsten Dunst was looking really rough in this movie. Like, really. Time for another stint in rehab, maybe?
I loved Nicole Kidman in her role, though.

Love the cast, but me and Sofia Coppola have a very volatile relationship. And watching overly quiet movies in the theater gives me anxiety. I don't know why.
Maybe I'll wait this one out.
Kirsten Dunst is looking really puffy. Weren't there rumors of alcohol problems at some point?

To clarify my comment on Kirsten Dunst, it wasn't how she looked that I was questioning, but her acting. Totally lackluster, though that could be how she was directed, as the character was pretty milquetoast.

I REALLY want to see this but everywhere it's showing is really far from both my office and my apartment so it's not looking likely. This is a pointless post but I wanted to ~air my disappointment~.

I'm on the fence about seeing it - I loved the original as a teen, found it on some UHF channel one day and was completely ... beguiled by it. (HA! See what I did there?) But I'm not sure I want to see a remake...

Kirsten Dunst said Sofia Coppola asked her to lose weight for this movie and Kirsten said no, so good for her. I never heard a more in-depth explanation of why Sofia wanted her to be thinner. It sounded like just because.
And Sofia gave some ridiculously terrible answers to questions about why she whitewashed the movie. She said she removed the slave character because it wasn't a good character and she didn't want the young girls who watch her movies to see a black character portrayed that way. (I guess re-writing the character to make it better was not an option in Sofia's mind.) She also said the slave character was an unnecessary subplot and she just "wanted to focus on the women" to which Sojourner Truth would like to respond, "Ain't I a woman?" I mean FFS.
And Sofia Coppola has never heard of the Bechdel test because she doesn't actually know much about film.
To sum up, Sofia Coppola is still an asshole.
But I will watch the movie and possibly enjoy it.
