As everyone says, I searched and couldn't find a thread.
I don't mean for this to turn super political (which is likely inevitable ;-) ) but I thought we could use a thread to discuss how well our Daily Show buddy is doing for himself on the big networks after a couple of years.
I remember holding my breath hoping The Colbert Report would do well, and even then I always thought the interviews were the weakest. But Colbert's Late Show has gotten very good. Ratings wise and content wise, which is a rare convergence!!
Tonight he had Gretchen Carlson on, and I really felt for her. Regardless of her past, I heard what she was saying and I think what she is trying to accomplish is admirable. Overall, I thought it was a great interview. Book tour or not, I respect her coming on the show. I can only imagine how awkward it was for them both after being attacked (and attacking) Colbert for years, and vice versa. Not only did they both acknowledge the awkwardness of the situation, but she pretty much acknowledged that Fox is a cult and it affected her perception of things.
As far as the other late night shows, I only pay attention to the Daily Show-adjacent ones as they're the ones on my DVR. I watch Colbert first and always... Sam Bee when she has aired ...Trevor Noah, uhhh I try to watch, but if I've run out of time I'm fine deleting a week or so of backlog. I think the correspondents on TDS are better than Noah right now. ...I tried Klepper's show and I honestly wasn't a fan. I miss Larry Wilmore, his show was cancelled too soon. What John Oliver is doing is on a whole different level, but we don't get HBO anymore...sad face :-(
Time slot -- Kimmel is still too Man Show connected for me, which is wrong I'm sure. But I've seen him interview some of my favorite peeps and I'm not impressed. Fallon is an airheaded sycophant, with no interest in changing, so no interest in watching him.
Anyway, about The Late Show! I think Colbert has absolutely become a worthy and timely successor of Letterman. Not the same, but not trying to be. He's settled in after some time, just like he did with The Colbert Report. Anyone else have opinions?
