A Quiet Place

Synoposis from RT:

a family must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you.

It's at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and I'd say it's deserved. There's nothing super deep about it, but damn if I wasn't tense the entire time. And there's a thru-line of grief, love and blame throughout that has a strong payoff. Well done, Mr. Krasinski!

I want to see it but a part in the trailer that annoyed me was when they’re walking through the woods and the kid is playing with the toy and it starts to light up and make sound...why would they let them have/keep a toy like that if they’re supposed to be quiet? Maybe I don’t know the whole backstory and I am definitely overreacting to a trailer, but I just thought it was silly.

Yeah, there's a prior scene that explains that and it's pretty plausible.

Is it gory at all? I don’t mind being tense for two hours and I thought the previews looked great but I can’t handle violent horror.

Not really. Little bit of blood, but nothing egregious.

There is blood, but it's not too bad. I went yesterday and absolutely loved it. It's sad and scary. Emily Blunt is amazing.

There was a thing that happened before the movie that pissed me off so much, though. Our local Toronto theatres regularly show little clips beforehand to warn people to be quiet during a film. They used footage from A Quiet Place, showing someone making noise in the film, and being snatched up by a monster. After all I did to avoid trailers and clips, to be more or less spoiled 3 minutes before the film starts, that was galling.

We saw it last night and I REALLY liked it. Such a clever premise for building tension; I was actually kind of glad that one person in the theater had a slight cough, I think it kept me from going insane! I had a few world-building quibbles. See spoiler:

{Spoiler}For one, GETTING PREGNANT WAS SO DUMB. They obviously went on raids--you're telling me there was not a single condom left in the U.S.? Not a one? And I didn't even really think the scene of her giving birth, etc, added all that much, there was plenty of tension without it. It also kind of cracked me up that she was taking her blood pressure--like, okay, you take your blood pressure, find out you have preeclampsia and...then what? What are you going to do with this information?

I also had a lot of questions about how the creatures took over. You either have to assume that the entire might of the U.S. military couldn't stop them (which: no. We absolutely have some sonic warfare stuff that could've taken these things out), and that not a single person in the entire world blew a dog whistle until it was too late. Or, you have to assume that when they first attacked there were, like, three aliens per human person and the ones we see in the movie are the ones that haven't moved on to harvest another planet yet. But then that doesn't make sense with the volume of newspapers that we see.

But I think it's to the movie's credit that neither of the above things detracted from my enjoyment at all. It did very much confirm my belief that I have NO DESIRE to live through an apocalypse and then fight to survive. I would rather be killed on day one.

I don't know very much about technical Oscars, but I wonder if it can get an award for sound...editing, maybe? I thought they did a really good job of simultaneously making the silent parts so, so tense while also making the loud sounds alternately really discordant (the aliens) or perfectly normal (the running water).

TTMR & I saw it last night and both of us really liked it. I'm a big sissy when it comes to scary movies, and this one didn't leave me with heebie-jeebies. It was more suspenseful and had jump-scares, rather than super-gory. It was scary like "Get Out" was scary except with a bit more blood.

John and Emily played such good parents.

I was finally able to see this today, and I really enjoyed it. I was already spoiled for a couple of things but that didn't detract from my enjoyment at all. I was kind of surprised to see the characters names in the credits, I was fully expecting them to just be labelled "the mother" and "the father" and so on.

And, I totally cried when

{Spoiler}John Krasinski's character sacrificed himself to save the children. I never thought I would ever cry at anything John Krasinski did.

I think everyone involved did a great job and I agree that it should get some sound-related Oscar nominations.
