My mom just texted me to ask if Mitch was crying during his speech and I had to tell her that no, sadly that’s just his spit reverberating in his wattle and that he always sounds like that.

Deputy WH Press Secretary Sarah Matthews just resigned.
But don’t worry - Kaleigh is still happily carrying Trump’s water.

Everything is crazy right now (understatement!). I still think George W. was one of the worst presidents ever, and I will never soften on that, but I do agree with the statement he put out. In the last year, I have agreed more often than not with people I could not imagine sharing common ground with before this sham of a presidency.
I don't really have the words to say what I think these last few months have done to US democracy. What's worse is that it's not even Trump I hold most responsible. He's awful, everyone knows it (even if they pretend otherwise), and anyone who thought he would accept defeat gracefully and not act like an insane person was either delusional or fooling themselves. It's every single elected official who supported (and still supports!) his antics that deserve most of the blame. Trump really couldn't have done any of this without them. To call them cowards would be too generous. To call them traitors would be too generous, too.
I will be pleasantly surprised if Trump faces any consequences for this. If he doesn't, then let's all strap in for a wild two weeks, because that is plenty of time to do more damage, especially if today's stunt got him nothing but some strong words and admonishments. How's that "he learned a lesson" going, Susan Collins? You still feeling good about that? I am sickened, and I want all of these people gone from politics forever.
One thing that annoys me is when people act like all of this only started happening when Trump was elected. No. The Republican party, for well over a decade, has been encouraging the absolute worst in its voters and members. Trump, and everything that is happening now, is just the end result of what they've been doing for a long time. They did everything possible and necessary to allow a Trump to come to power and allow his supporters to dictate politics. Plenty of sane conservatives voted for this party again and again, pretending they didn't see the insanity their elected leaders were courting. They dismissed anyone who warned against it as being too hyperbolic and alarmist. I hope any sane Republicans who are left can do some serious self-reflection today.

On the one hand, yes, it's good that people like George W and Mitt Romney are speaking out. But everything we're seeing is the perfectly logical extension of the Southern Strategy / Newt Gingrich / Karl Rove / etc. playbook. Every "sane" Republican has this on their heads. They ALL helped create this monster.

This isn’t an attack on this take (and please don’t take it as such). It is something of a relief that these people aren’t tactical geniuses. But the second most shocking thing today was the complete security failure. It mirrored what happened a few months ago when armed “protesters” invaded the Capitol in Michigan. I saw much stronger reactions in my hometown all summer directed at people who protested outside of an empty Federal building than what was put up against the people storming the Capitol while Congress was in session. The difference seems to be that these are mostly white people, and the kind of white people who people who study this stuff say are the biggest domestic threat because of their tendency towards violence, yet everyone looks away and shrugs, because they are white. The second group to ever invade the Capitol in this country’s history did it because law enforcement shrugged and let them in. I don’t know how to solve that problem. Sure. I agree, the most worrisome part of the security failure is the systemic racism that's behind it at least to some extent (to suggest otherwise is complete denial). But in the worst case in which the police who defend one of our most important government buildings stepped aside because they're squarely on the bad guys' side, the good news is that it'll be hard for them to do that again. Today's events were a shocking atrocity that won't soon be forgotten, and everyone will demand more foolproof security that will almost certainly be in place starting tonight and continuing for quite awhile. That doesn't fix the underlying problem, but it at least keeps the symptom (angry mobs disrupting the functioning of our government) in check. More realistically, the security breakdown might have been a mix of "support" for the protestors and just plain incompetence/laziness. You can't underestimate just how big of a factor the latter has become in so many aspects of federal and state governments, from the Secret Service to public health departments that have been botching the vaccine rollout, thanks to trump administration funding cuts, demotivation and neglect. The bottom line is that the officers who let the rioters in did the easy thing. That's not great, but it's less scary and less indicative of something more problematic (support for the protestors) than if they did a hard thing. I still hope everyone who let this happen gets dealt with as decisively as possible. But if that happens, maybe there's hope this might be a more of a one-time thing, and not the beginning of an era of total anarchy which many of us thought it looked like while it was happening.

I'm very sorry for this horrible day, America. This insurrection attempt will be go down as a very sad day in American history. Needlessly a life was lost, many people, mostly in law enforcement, were injured. It's tragic.
This was a security desaster, obviously, and must be investigated. Part of it is sadly systemic, I think. And of course the President is to blame for it as well, he is inciting it and also not doing his duty. It was telling that Pence basically took over the coordination of the response to the attacks and the various federal departments and military leaders coordinated with Congress leaders and Pence, no one talked with Trump.

She died for following Trump. He is not worth it. She was literally wearing a Trump flag as a cape and looks to be very, very young. I would not be surprised to learn that she was one of the "just for funsies" crowd who just wanted to be part of the thing and wasn't a hardcore believer in the conspiracy. Very sad and so completely unnecessary. Better security should have been in place since everyone knew the Maga crowd was planning SOMETHING, but Trump wanted this spectacle. It's 8 pm, they are supposed to resume certifying the election now. I kinda feel like it shouldn't have been announced until it was all done, there are still an awful lot of people in the streets in DC. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. She was a terrorist. Stop making excuses for her. She was a 14-year military vet with security clearance who drank the kool-aid. She should have made better choices and decided against storming the US Capital in a failed attempt to subvert the will of the American people and the democratic process. Screw her.

And I'm sure Trump will make sure she gets military honors at her funeral, despite having committed treason.
